This may be stupid but I am having trouble starting a 89 bayliner with a 50 hp force
it will fire but then die. the only way I can do it is when it fires to throtlle it up.
I have looked for a fast idle lever on the throtlle lever but I can see none.
as soon as you move the lever forward it goes into gear before the throtle is increased .
am I missing somethng ? is there any way to increase the motor spead without engaging the
shift mechenism? see I told you I was too new to boat .
I dont want to look like a total dweeb at the dock the first time I take it out ..thanks for any help

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

Welcome to iboats ch....

Some controls have a button in the middle of the control to push in so you can give the engine throttle on cold starts. No button? Try pulling the handle out and then giving it throttle. One or the other will be there. Good boating!

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

yes it is probably a pull type, i have a 85 bayliner capri it (was) rigged with a 50hp chrysler force, it was a pull type. just pull it out horizontally and push forward for "warm up". ;)

ps. i myself didnt know about this until a year after buying the boat. i felt like an idiot after this guy showed it to me.

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

OK, here's another question. Does the Force 50 have a power pack and how do I tell if it is bad? I took the boat out today and it would only go 10 MPH. I also only have one spark plug that is firing. Changed the plugs but still only have one. Pulled the flywheel off to inspect the points but there is none therefore I am guessing this so called (power pack) is an electronic ignition module?? I haven't checked all the connections yet but am in the process of doing it. Any help would be appreciated once again.............thanks, after finding out that you pull the throttle lever out for fast idle on this forum, I didn't look like a total dweeb, I at least got to float around on the lake

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

ch. i dont remember where the powerpack is, if any. check the coils out, clean the carbs good. the chryslers were bad on coils they are almost always cracked. try starting it at night and see if the spark is going to ground. anyway i had to replace mine when i bought the boat (85 bayliner W/50hp force). it did the same as yours be carfull with how much you put in it. i put a new carb, reeds, coils, etc. i spent more than the motor was worth! dont make the same mistake! i still wasnt satisfied with it and i bought a 83 50hp evinrude that i am very happy with. also you'll probably find that nobody wants to work on the chrysler force motors
just my two cents. :) hope i didnt scare you

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

I had the same problem with mine and it ended up being a coil. Also had a 85 capri with a 50hp Force and other than that it ran strong for many years. Good luck!

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

I thank everybody for the help. I think I have it narrowed down to the "electronic ignition module". I can change the leads on the coils from it and get spark from each coil , but one one wire out of the module seems dead. now the hunt for a new module. then hopefully happy boating .
thanks to everyone again.
CH

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

Hi ch: I have the same boat -15ft Bayliner Capri with the Force 50. Nice compact little runabout and a lot of fun but be sure you get a manual for your engine and be prepared for problems that may arise in the future. I have the Clymer, but I understand Seloc manuals are more user friendly. If you enjoy tinkering and maintaining your engine, you can get lots of use from it despite all the bad publicity about Forces. Good luck and enjoy your new boat!

Re: bayliner 50 hp starting question

Where is the best (and cheapest) place to find the power pack? The cheapest I have found online so far is 170.00.

You could also try Twin City outbaord in Shakopee, MN.. They ship everywhere. Or try E-BAy..

Before spending a dime, make sure it's the module. They are an achiles heal on this motor, but the trigger is also a suspect here.
Check the two coils for continuity. If they do, then, yes, you can coclude the pack is bad on one side.
