You should have a steady unbroken stream at all engine speeds.

Re: 1996 75 hp force impeller change

michigan man the hardest part is getting the unit back up four hands are better than two if you know what I mean.Trim engine to up position remove six bolt on lower unit don't forget the one under the trim tab disconnect the linkage and rubber vacum line for the speedometer unit should drop down.impeller is under the stainless housing with a key way(note direction of fins)also a little grease inside housing to prevent dry start up that should be it.Also you may have to engauge the shift rod so that you can turn the prop to realine the gear splines on shaft.

You aren't going inside the lower unit.
You remove the lower unit, and the waterpump housing sits on top of the lower unit.

Re: 1996 75 hp force impeller change

I have the same motor and did this my self. Remove all the bolts holding the lower unit on. Under the zinc part there is a bolt remove that. Then spin out the lin age on the motor that ma es the engine go into fwr, neu, rev. Now with everything removed the unit will slide down. Fixing the impeller is easy be sure to use loc tight on all bolts its insurance. On your shaft there is a plastic thingy on the top dont forget to put that bac on mine was up in there. Getting the shaft to line up ta es some time and tin ering. With that out of the way now you need to adj lin age, spin it bac on and do a static test of frw, rev, neu ma e neu neu. Static means by spinning by hand without the engine turned on. I found my engine does not pee alot at idle either.

at idle now it spits out alot of water but a month ago it spudered out. Maybe I had a slight bloc age. I did the impeller a year ago and the one i too out was li e new. You should change the thermo small air hole up,impeller. How is you outboard running. idles badly but better on seafoam n high octane. Wonder if my idle is way off.

There is a plate that separates the exhaust from the waterpump...you must use silicone to seal it before you push the gearcase up into place.

TMD

Re: 1996 75 hp force impeller change

Hi deer man, welcome back.
Cost varies from motor to motor.
$13 for one of my motors, $29 for the other one.
You can get them from Merc dealer, Napa, or here on iboats. But to tell you the truth, I can't seem to decipher the part number codes here on iboats.

I would suggest you get a manual also, either the Clymers, or the factory manual from the Merc dealer. It will prove to be invaluable.

Re: 1996 75 hp force impeller change

its easy first disco the shift linkage metal bar, unscrew lower bolts + one under zinc anode. Slide down look up in there mine had a black plastid thing over the shaft dont forget to put back in place. Other than that its easy as cake I used loctight on the thread in the impeller and well every bolt lol including the linkage dont want thing backing up. The linkage is easy to do with the motor off at all times, spin by hand to find center new, fwr, rev you will figure this out.

i got the impeller in,and ran only a little while.not a lot of water out pea hole,i was using muffs.were does most water when checking come out from engine, the dealer told me when installing impeller,to turn shaft clock wise to set it it right place in cover, and use a little grease to slide, looks like half way up lower area is were most water is comming from and some out pea hole, but not a steady hard stream.i didnt run real long, jim

Re: 1996 75 hp force impeller change

YOu should get a steady stream, but not real forceful. Your motor only generates about 3 lbs of water pressure at idle speed.

Could be you didn't have the water hose turned up high enough to supply enough water.

Also could have a small piece of debris in the pee hole hose. You can try to slide a thin wire into it, or remove it and make sure it is clear.

Some water will exit from the holes on either side, just above the cavitation plate. As rpm's increase, most of the water will be blown out with the exhaust, thru the center of the prop.

Did you used silicone when puting the lower unit back onto the upper motor leg? I did not but am wondering if I should have. How does yours run and find out the comp. Cant get any info on what comp should be mines 105,105,107 I can guess it should be 135-145 like other outboards but not sure

Re: 1996 75 hp force impeller change

199675hpforce, My 1995 70hp has compression of 127-132.

The numbers often will differ depending on method used to take the reading.
Throttle open, warm or cold engine, number of engine cranks, accuracy of the gauge, etc, can all influence the readings. Your actual compression readings may be higher than you think. Important to always do it the same way, so you are comparing apples to apples.

Your numbers are very close together, this is good.

The official recommended compression for the 70-75hp is, " maximum 15 psi variation". No actual numbers were ever published by the factory.
