New to outboards -- just picked up a pontoon boat with 1989 Force 35HP. Cannot get the motor to start and idle without someone manipulating the throttle from inside the cowling. Had newly installed control cables checked by another mechanic and was assured everything was tracking properly. Motor runs fine once you get it running, but you have to maintain fuel flow manually while in neutral. Putting the motor in neutral via control cables results in motor dying. Mechanic said throttle cam was set properly for idle, but did not have time to actually start engine. Any suggestions on next adjustments to make? New plugs; new gas; excellent spark.

Re: 1989 Force 35HP Idling Problems

I would try adjusting the idle screw on the carburetor. The screw is just above the carburetor air intake, and start by screwing it all the way into just until it stops (not tight), then turn it back out 1 full turn. If that was the problem, it should run somewhat at that point in idle. If so, wait until it gets to running temp and turn clockwise in 1/8 turn increments until the rpm increases and the engine starts to sneeze. Then turn 1/8 increments counterclockwise (counting your increments) until rpm's decrease. The final position will be halfway in between these two points (ie: 4 increments between, then turn clockwise 2 increments and you're done). This adjusts the fuel mixture.
Then adjust the idle speed screw to obtain idle of 600-750 rpm at idle (that's specifically for your motor)

Yes..it sounds like you are trying to idle the engine too slow.

TMD
