50HP Force is sluggish

I have a Quantum 16ft fish & ski with a Force 50hp. The engine runs good, but has low power. When I give it the gas, it seems to take a long time to plane out. The RPM's seem low until it finally gets going. Once it's moving, it will run 27 MPH (by myself) and 23 with my wife and kids, which is fast enough for me. It's just the sluggish starts and no power on take off when I have someone with me. It almost seems as though the throttle needs to move another inch. I'm wondering if it could use a different prop, carb, or something else.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: 50HP Force is sluggish

Sorry. It's a 1990 model. I don't have a tach, so I'm only guessing as to RPM's. What is WOT?

I cannot find any numbers on the prop. Should there be?

No, the engine has not been de-carbed. I can do that tomorrow. What is the best cleaner to use?

I'm a car guy, not a boat tech, but it seems like driving a car with a rear end geared too high.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: 50HP Force is sluggish

WOT = Wide Open Throttle
Tach is important because you choose the prop that will give you rpm's in the recommended range, at WOT. If your engine is not reaching the recommended rpm, then you are lugging the engine. Your engine produces its power and breathes freely at the rec. rpm.
Numbers should be on prop. You may have to remove it and look at the inside.

Decarb? SeaFoam DeepCreep, or whatever you have available in your area.

Run engine at fast idle, with engine running, slowly spray liberal amount into each carb, its gonna smoke up the place,
spray for a couple minutes, now spray a larger amount into carbs until engine chokes out and stops,
remove spark plugs and spray decarb liberally into each cylinder, install the spark plugs, let it soak for 2 to 10 hours.
Start the engine and run at medium throttle, or if at the lake, run it at full throttle. It won't hurt to spray some more through the carbs. Run it for atleast 10 minutes to flush the crud out of your engine. Now remove and clean, or replace the spark plugs.

It works well to do the spraying, the night before you go to the lake. This way you can let it soak overnight, and really flush it out at the lake.

Don't do this in front of the garage door or the house, unless you want it coated with greasy crud.
--------------------------------------
You might want to check the compression after decarb.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try the de-carb as I doubt it's ever been done before. We'll see how that works.

I just bought the boat so I'm a newbie. Learning something new every minute.

Chris
