Re: 1985 50hp points gap
That's possible, I supose. But not likely, as the timing never drifts-away from what it is set at. So there would be no need to futz with it to begin with. If the guy didn't know what he was doing, then yes, perhaps it would be time to place a timing light on it, and re-adjust
idle-only settings. Timing tracking thru the power band is not very much fun, esecilly if you are by yourself.

But the fuel pump is primary, next to what it runs off of (compression). This fuel pump was not designed to hold-up to alcohol-enhanced fuels. Alcohol eats rubber, which is the diaphram material. The fuel pump can be removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled in less than an hour in most cases, and once you are familiar with the procedure, you can do it in 10minutes at sea...If you're very carefull not to drop anything.
Get a compression gauge and test it, and rebuild the fuel pump. But the fuel pump runs from pulses of compression and vacuum.
no compression, poor pump operation, no idle.
Recheck that you have spark, however weak it appears, to both cylinders, because this motor, like all other multi-cylinder 2cycle outboards, will run on one, and die under load. But with only two cylinders, it will also "chug" like a harley with bad valves.
