I have always heard you want a good carnauba wax for your boat. I went and bought some "Mothers" carnauba wax. It's good stuff but an absolute nightmare to get off. Even removing a thin coat is brutal. I then got cheap and went and got some Turtle Wax (paste). It was easier to work with but still a bear to remove. Finally, I went back to my old fateful "Nu Finish" which claims not to be a wax. I did a little experiment and found that Nu Finish left the shiniest finish and was more slippery to the touch than others. What I really like is the ease of use. What do you guys think of the non wax polishes? Good idea? Bad idea? I really do not know. It does say it's used for boats too and it does live up to its reputation of lasting through "52 carwashes".

It may hold up to 52 car washes but when was the last time you took your boat through a car wash?

I run in SW and car waxes and all the other "polishes" last about 2 outing before it worn off the boat. Most guys I know switched over to Collinite Fleetwax and have never looked back. Put one coat on and then wait a week or so and apply a second coat and your good to go for the season or more.

fleet wax

^^^ What dingbat said x2. That stuff is awesome, and works just as well on cars too.

Manipulator, since you already purchased the Mothers(and it w/o a doubt good stuff)I will give you the how-to best way to apply and remove it.First ,it must be cool and dry out.2nd there must be no sun on the surface,it must be cool to the touch.Dampen the applicator with water and squeeze out the excess.Apply it to a small section and immediately put a rotary polishing wheel to it and keep working the wheel until the wax is dry and gone. The second coat will go much easier. The first coat on gelcoat actually tries to absorb thats why it seems so hard to remove.

Thanks Charlie! Yes, it is a bear to remove on a boat. Not too bad on the car.

If you really want to use a paste wax, seal the finish first with Meguires Show Car Glaze #7, then apply the wax.

Re: Wax on...wax off...

The main problem we run into with wax and polishes for cars is that they are designed for a painted surface. We are using it on gelcoat.Paint and gelcoat are waaaaaaaay different.Silicone wax and polish seem to work best on gelcoat because it basically penetrates and moisturizes the finish.Carnuba puts a hard cover on to the surface it is used on.If the finish is thirsty, which all gelcoat is,the carnuba will get the slight hydration that it contains sucked right out of it and the only thing left is a solid which will be a ***** to remove.

I love that boat!!! I had one of those MFG's in the 18' version and fished the heck out of it in Lake Ontario. Brings back some great memories, thanks for the picture.

I use Meguiar's Flagship. It's the top of the Meguiar's line, and leaves a "wet-look" finish, and is easy to remove, even in sun. A couple of buddies also use Seapower and swear by it.

Ken,

No need to apologize, I am new here and feeling my way around as well. I believe there is a setting to allow members to send you e-mails, you have to set it up in your profile. In the meantime, I will drop you a line as I would love some pictures. I agree with Crazy Charlie...nothing quick is lasting but you've got to use the right stuff. The first pass is to clean it and the second is to seal it. I use CarBrite they have a website and you can locate a local dealer. Usually these guys have routes like Snap-on. The will walk you through the selection of what to use for your application.

I use Wonder Wax for the first step, Silicone with cleaners and mild abrasives to get off the scum and Weather Shield, silicone based for a hard polished finish that won't wear off at WOT. Any buffer is better than hand, too many bad angles on a boat. Good luck!

Re: Wax on...wax off...

also need to use the right applicator/ removal towel , little sponges for application of wax are fine,a cut cloth/white with a rough feel to remove wax or better yet a microfiber . and a baby diper type to polish and buff. im completly hooked on s100 for a wax . also you cant beat the klasse twins for a nice polymer finish . also soverngnion if you have alot of money and want the finest. new finnish is pretty good also . i heard ...... anyone try clay barring there boat.

Re: Wax on...wax off...

wash boat / clay bar? /use surface-paint cleaner /polish/ wax/wax/wax.............only thing is is that boat paint dosent have a clear coat to polish .I'd just wet sand the gelcoat and use a polymer sealent wax often like the klasse twins, with a coating of s100 on top if you have the time .
