can someone help? I have a 1989 force 125 with several problems. First, once I get it running and put it in gear it dies. It will start right back up but unless I give almost full throttle it will die. Second, while trying to fix the first problem in my backyard it sounded like a knocking around or clanking noise coming from the lower unit but after pulling the propeller shaft and rear gear I cant see any visable damage. I could'nt pull the forward gear or drive shaft because of the "special" tools needed, any ideas? Last but not least, I have two rods that raise and lower the motor but will not hold the motor up for long, any suggestions?

Sounds like your first problem is fuel related. It could be the carbs need a sync and adjustment or you have bad gas or you have an air leak somewhere in your fuel lines. A manual will walk you through synchronizing your carbs. If that dont work you will probably have to rebuild the carbs and the fuel pump. I dont know where you are from but here we have oxygenated fuel and it is hard on the rubber parts in the gas system. Here is a link to a manual for your motor

force manual

Your second problem is you may have broken the pivot pin for your shifter. This is located in the very front of your lower unit. I had this happen when I could not shift in idle and had to slam it into gear at high rpm. This will require a complete tear down of the lower unit and you will need to buy a new seal kit.

All this work will cost you about 100 bucks out of pocket. Hopefully someone here can give you a cheaper solution. I would recomend you get a manual and start with adjusting the fuel system and go from there.

Good Luck

Any ideas on the noise from the lower unit. It's really more like a rattling noise than a knocking, like something's loose. That's why I thought gears or something but everything looks new so far.

hi, fish4food,
my engine does the same thing, dies when putting in gear, so far the only solution ive come up with is to let it warm up 5 mins or more. then its ok. I was thinking of seeking a adjustment or adding a throttle cable to the motor.
my exposure is very limited though. just two outings so far.

Try putting your motor in neutral and remove plug wires. Turn prop in both directions. Do you hear a clicking? If so your shifter adjustment is off. You may be experiencing the clutch slipping on the gear. If you broke the pivot pin by slamming it into gear at high rpm the clutch may not be engaging the gear all the way.

If you only hear the clicking noise while rotating the prop in reverse, is this a problem and if so how can I fix it?

Is the shifter in neutral when you hear the clicking? If so hopefuelly some force guru will help. Chryslers have an adjusting screw for this. I dont know how the adjustment is made on a force

Re: 1989 force 125 problems

I had a problem with my 125 force, it would start up and idel but when put in gear it would stall. I was lucky, I was told to check the rpm's , they were at 500, I increased to 800 per the manual and it works SUPER, no problems, it is very comforting when you are trying to get out when the wind and waves pickup. the manual advised 700 to 900 rpm. Just an idea to start.

Have you checked for spark and cylinder compression yet?

Could be it is not firing on all cylinders.

I had a similar problem. I changed/cleaned my plugs and it went away. It happens each time my plugs begin to foul.
