This spring my battery wouldn't stay charged, and the motor was difficult to start. On last fishing trip motor wouldn't start. Stator went out. Replaced Stator and Regulator with upgraded units. Solenoid checks out. Motor now starts better than it ever has. The only connection to the battery is the motor. All other accessories have been disconnected. When I put a voltmeter in line with the positive lead, the motor is still pulling from the battery, with or without the 20amp fuse removed from above the regulator. Any ideas why?

How old is the battery. If it is more than a couple of years old or has sat for more than a couple of days discharged it is probably no good. The motor even when not running will put a small load on the motor. When it is running hook a meter up across the battery on DC volts and see what you are getting. When you are not using the boat disconnect one of the leads from the battery. If it dont have at least 12.6 volts on it put a charger on it. This is a start.

Also disconnect the battery and touch the battery leads together. Then hook an ohm meter up to it black lead to black lead and red lead to red lead. What does the meter read or does it count up or down. Then reverse the meter leads so red is to black and black is to red. What happens to the meter now. Make sure meter is on auto ranging or put it on the highest ohm setting your meter has.
