Whenever starting cold I have to remove the cover and manually choke the motor, which starts immediately. Do I need to replace the choke or is there a trick I don't know about?

Re: Automatic Choke

Pressing in on the key should activate the choke solenoid and keep the chocke closed as long as you keep the key pushed in.

Welcome to iboats.

No such thing as as automatic choke on a Force. Push the key in and it's choked. Let go and it's not. Does it choke when you push in the key? The solenoids are touchy and if far enough out of adjustment they won't pull the plunger.

Welcome Heyoldguy and rev.007.

Please always post make/model/year info.
Could be faulty solenoid/actuator, faulty ignition stitch, loose wiring, or operator error.

Let us know what you have.

Re: Automatic Choke

hello
in 99 it used a push to "choke" switch. however I belive it actually uses a fuelprimer solinoid rather than choke plates. with the key on engine off and hood removed push the keyswitch in and see if it clicks. if it does have a set of choke butterflies then see if it clicks and the linkage moves.
How are you manually choking the motor ?

Re: Automatic Choke

If your engine has choke butterflies then it is absolutely essential that when the choke is operated the butterflies FULLY CLOSE.

In Chryslers of old if the choke butterflies did not fully close then there was NO HOPE of the engine starting.

Of course manually choking the engine (with the lever at the engine) or hands over the carb intakes would get around the problem of a lazy choke solenoid.

Cheers,
Nicholas

Re: Automatic Choke

to answer your question the best i can.first it
does not click when you turn the switch on.
second there is a little push button switch on the right side of the motor left hand side if you are on the ground.push the black button down
and it will start.i have ask the same question about a clicking sound.you are suppose to push the switch key in to choke but nothing happens.
i feel that the marine dealer is just trying to run up another bill on me.i bought the boat and motor new in 1999.i haven't had a good season yet.
mercury will not offer any help at all.it is like
tough.i really appreciate any help.

Re: Automatic Choke

Start Simple! Check all conections. clean with contact cleaner and go from there. The marine enviroment is tough on wiring. espesialy those that are exsposed.

Re: Automatic Choke

I am having a little trouble understanding what you mean by the " little black button on the side of the motor."
I know there were some changes made to the 1999 models, but this black button is new to me.

Is it on the carb?
on the throttle linkage?
the starter relay?

When you turn the key to start, the starter should engage and spin the motor.

When you push in on the key, there shiuld be a very quiet click coming from just behind the carb. This would be the sound of the fuel enrichment valve opening.

For starters, please describe the starting process you are using, in detail, from hooking up the gas line to getting the motor running. You may be missing one small but important step.

Re: Automatic Choke

ok, Since I haven't actually worked on a Force that was newer than 1996, I wanted to be sure we were talking about the same thing. There is no black button on the older models. Be glad you have that manual override button, none of my 6 motors have one.

So, the fuel enrichment valve is not opening when you push in on the key. Could be a faulty ignition switch, the wire may not be connected to the ignition switch, a bad enrichment valve, or a loose or broken wire at either end.

A simple check for voltage on the yelo/black striped wire should tell you if the signal is getting to the enricher. Also check to ensure the solid black ground wire coming out of the enricher is attached at both ends.

This should be an easy fix and any dealer should be able to work on that motor and get her running. Perhaps it is time to check out another dealer, or an independent repair shop.

Anyway, check out that wiring. You can use any $12 circuit tester from Radio Shack, or even a $3 test light from the hardware store.

Re: Automatic Choke

Glad you got her fixed, sorry it cost you the dollars, but it cost the service guy your trust. That will hurt him in the end.

happy boating.
