I have recently acquired a force 125 (blue coils, year I dont know)and the magnet has fallen off the inside of the flywheel,$1000Aus for a new flywheel(no thanks),I have a locktight product for bonding magnets to housings in dc motors,PROBLEM= I have no idea of the position of the magnet .ie. the position of the join, there are no marks or any sort of reference to go by,any help would be most appreciated. :(

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

Welcome to iboats.

Is that the magnet in the middle, or one of the bigger ones? If one of the big ones, make sure the magnet wants to attract to the two it's near. If it repels, it's backwards. Unless somebody took it out, it should already be in the correct position.

The magnet in the middle controls the timing. If you can't tell by residue left on the magnet and flywheel where it was, you're best off chucking it and looking for a used one. If you are able to tell where it had been, try bonding it back on and make certain to check your timing the first time you start it.

I have never looked into this, so I don't know if you can use the flywheel from a different horsepower. Maybe somebody can help? But if that's an option, it opens a lot more possibilities when looking for a used one.

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

thanks for the help,a used one=cant get one in aus, looked everywhere, the magnet or magnets are set in a rubber strip that wraps entirely around the inside of the flywheel, the strip is about an inch wide by 1 foot long with 12 magnets in it I assume(you cant see them)therefore the location of the position where the 2 ends meet would solve my problem.Looks like Im forking out 1k for a newy though :(

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

If that's a pre-Mercury Force, that would have a Prestolite ignition (two blue boxes feeding four blue coils. I wonder if that pricetag means you get a whole new upgraded ignition system (1 black box feeding four smaller darker blue coils ... or maybe all the way up to individual black CDMs with no box feeding them)?

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

A big no on that one,the engine idols fine but wont accelerate past about 2500(timing I would think). The magnets are obviously in the wrong spot.As a last ditch effort could someone look in there force service manual(I dont have one YET)and see if there is any reference to magnet positions in relation to the flywheel on a pre merc 125 ignition. If not does anyone have one of these engines that could give me a position of the magnet join .ie.where the two ends of the strip meet inside the flywheel in relation to the keyway or something. All help would be most appreciated. :(

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

Sorry, nothing in my Clymers shop manual about magnet placement.

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

MadmanShan,

I'm trying to work this through, but have little to work with,so try to follow my reasoning....

I looked at most Force 125 ignition part pics from 1983 thru 1989.They only show the topside of the flywheel. But they also show the stator that obviously gets charged by the magnet. In addition, the trigger under the flywheel is a lot smaller in diameter.....

I propose that the magnet only provides voltage to charge the ignition as well as charge the battery.A sensor or ring part of the flywheel closer to the center of the flywheel is what actually gives a signal to the tigger telling it to fire.....

Therefor, hence and ergo, the placement of the outer magnet doesn't matter. It only has to generate a charge, and the inner 'ring'tells the trigger when to fire it....

What do you think?
Johnson/Evinrude makes an epoxy just for reattaching flywheel magnets.

DHP

PS this won't help your 2500 rpm problem unless being unattached properly to the flywheel cuts down on available voltage.

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

thanks all for the help, the mind boggles in relation to this one.I will experiment a bit more with things and see if I can figure out whats going on,the motor ran fine before the magnet fell off which concernes me a bit about the magnet placement but your theory that it only provides voltage sounds right or there would be some sort of marking on the flywheel.Ill let you in on progress.(a non-Force outboard is starting to sound better by the second) ;)

Re: FORCE 125 FLYWHEEL MAGNET

If you see this, write and tell me what the solution to your problem was. I have a similar problem. Don't know if the flywheel is bad or not. May just buy ignition system.
