i have a 89' force 85hp outboard with a leak in the lower unit
it looks like its comming from the very front and back pee hole on the right side and it smells like gas
i dont know much about outboards but i dont see any leaks at the top near the carb
is there any way to tell if this is gas or not(does the lower unit lube have a similar smell?)

Lower unit lube smells like gear oil.
If it is coming from the weep holes just above the lower unit, it is probably unburnt fuel that is from the exhaust. Is likely dark in color from the carbon buildup in the exhaust.

Check your lower unit lube by letting a few drops out, it should not be creamy colored.

Performing a decarb on the motor will flush alot of this crud out, as well as remove carbon deposits from your motor's pistons, head, and rings.

Read about it here:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000016

I agree with Roscoe. You are seeing unburned gas and oil mixed with carbon. These motors are not very clean burning motors. If the decarb dont fix the problem there is probably a puddle valve system that is clogged and may need cleaning. This puddle valve is designed to take this unburned or condensed raw fuel and re circulate it back to be burned. Another problem may be week spark which will give you similar results.
