I have a 1970 45hp Chrysler outboard motor. It sat for a few years and now with fresh fuel and a fully charged battery it won't start. I have followed the start procedure ( pull switch by control lever and leave on for 30 sec. before cranking ) and although I good cranking speed the motor still won't start. I have cleaned the flywheel inner surface with emory cloth and I have confirmed continuity from the points to ground. When the key is switched to on I have power to the main buss but I don't have power to the secondary coils. Does anyone have any idea what I can do next ?

Howdy, kaeyrie.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to the Engine FAQ section and do the "Outboard wont start" exercise.

Come back and let us know what you found.

Good luck. :)

Re: Motor won't start after long slumber

I have done all of the steps listed in the FAQ under out board motor won't start. The plugs aren't getting any spark at all. Thus I checked out pick up points and found good continuity to ground. Also found 12 volts at the power terminal when the key is on. Any other suggestions ?

Hmmm. This needs someone who has the manual on your ignition system. Sounds to me like you have a grounded magneto kill wire, but I don't know what your ignition system is.

Good luck. :)

Re: Motor won't start after long slumber

I just had this problem with a 1984 50hp that sat for 2 years. All the same symptoms.

What I found was, 2 little black wire attached to the stator had snapped at the connector when the engine was cranked after sitting for so long. I replaced those wires and it started right up.

So, I would suggest taking the flywheel off and check to make sure there are NO broken wires.

Hope this helps.

OK, so how do I remove the flywheel. I have tryed a wheel puller, then I tryed a harmonic balancer puller ( the puller broke ). If I get this flywheel off I could inspect the points.

Any ideas ?

To remove the flywheel, I used a little WD40 (I let it sit for a while to penitrate), a harmonic balancer puller (which lokked like it could have snapped at anytime right before it let loose), and a few hits with aa rubber mallet.

It seemed that the 2 parts were sort of welded together with a thin layer of rust. It took some doin', but it eventually broke loose.

Just curious -- what is the switch you are pulling for 30 seconds before starting? In order for that switch to do anything, it would have to control something electric (primer) which would make a noise when activated. Is that feature working?

The switch does supply power to some sort of Primer that warms the head. It gets power but as far as I can tell it doesn't get hot. The device looks like the outter plug end of a spark plug with a yellow wire to it.

Your chrysler probably dont have that switch. I believe that is a force option and even if chrysler had one I doubt it would be on your 70 model chrysler. I have never worked on the electronics on my chyrsler 45 but I have some photos and stuff that might be of help to you. If you are interested email me at ralgoetz@comcast.net

Actually the motor does have this switch and I pulled it off. It is in fact a heater.
