I want to remove the tilt/trim unit and I actually know how. What I really want is how can i manually tilt motor? Do I just get a rod and poke throught the holes on the sides? And when I tilt it up how do I hold it up? There is no way to tilt it up and then put the rod in.

Yes, all you need is a pin for the adjustment holes. Your motor should have a locking mechanism on the transom bracket (passengers side). That will lock it all the way up. I don't like them for trailering, especially on a Bayliner, because it is very hard on the transom. I built a transom saver for trailering.

There is a latch mechanism that is not included on the bracket when you have power TNT. If you don't have the latch, the motor will kick up when you put it in reverse.

The other piece t.martin is talking about is the tilt lock.

Incidently all the brackets are identical for manual tilt or power TNT.

I had that latch on mine , but I took it off. I would rather my motor pick up a little in reverse than the motor being rigid if you hit something.

Re: Remove tilt/trim unit

T.martin nothing happened to it its still on the boat but the trim cylinder is not straight. There are 5 bolts but I could not get 1 out its frozen. So I tried with 4 bolts worked 1 time now leaks down and will not go up either unless you hold it up. I am thinking the power tilt/trim is not worth the hassles its causing me.

I would like to know where to get that up lock as I don't have 1. It would be good in the water then use the bracket I got to hold motor when towing it.

It is actually t.martin but I forgot my password. Anyway I have an idea for you. If your tilt cylinder still works, why can't you just unhook the 2 hardlines going from the pump to your trim cylinder and plug all 4 holes with 3/8" fine thread set screws. That way your tilt cylinder can still lift it up to put your adjustment pin in (without throwing your back out) and then tilt it down till it is snug against the pin. Is the cylinder bent on your trim or something else, because I think you will really miss the loss in speed.

Re: Remove tilt/trim unit

Basically the trim cylinder is made of a pot and a cylinder with a top that has 5 bolts. The rod and ring ride in the cylinder and never actually touch the pot however it had cocked in the pot so to speak due to not having all 5 bolts in. That trim cylinder is powerful stuff.

The piston rod sticks out of rhe top and the top and cylinder have cocked in relation to the base which I call a pot due to thats how it looks.

You can see how it was and the bolt on the right is the one I could not remove and did not replace hopeing the other 4 would hold it but appears to have failed.

I am going to get some carbide bits and an easy out and see if I can fix it.

If that fails I will just live with the tilt working. Thx for the tip.

Re: Remove tilt/trim unit

I set mine up where I just used the trim cylinder and plugged the ports for the tilt. It works, but you might want to console in an expert to see if it could damage the pump. Did your trim need rebuilt? i had problems with a stainless bolt breaking on my lower unit and I drilled it with a regular HSS bit. You just have to go slow and use plenty of lubrication. Can you get vice grips on it?

I looked at your pic a little more. It looks like you bent the other four bolts. Can you take a pic of your transom brackets. I want to see how they differ from mine, because all of the Force brackets I have ever seen have the tilt lock. Keep us posted on your progress.

Re: Remove tilt/trim unit

T I did not bend them they were like that I replaced all 5. However the 1 that was sticking out actually twisted off so I did not replace it.

I was using vicegrips at the time. Thats the old picture before I had it working again. It is not working now anfd the trim is cocked as seen in pic above but not as bad.

BTW there is nothing on the bracket to lock it up or down. There is a removable bracket to hold the motor tilted for trailering and thats it.

Re: Remove tilt/trim unit

L.I. too many parts and not enough brains on my part to figure it out!

However I removed the trim unit and pluged the trim ports off at the pump. Works like a charm not I just need an aluminium bar of the correct size to stick in the holes. :)

The tilt cylinder wrecked the O ring real bad this time! I might feel like fixing it someday.

Do you have a spacer between the tilt cylinders so they stay in position?

t.martin not yet. Also need a solid bar to position motor too. I am thinking that a 1/2" schdule 40 pipe will work fine. And a solid aluminium bar bent on 1 end and drilled for a cotter pin on the other.

1/2 inch is slightly too small! Will be taking it back and getting the 3/4 inch. and the bar I bould is 5/16" that to small too. Oh well at least I have the receipt!

I don't know if aluminum will be strong enough. I made mine out of stainless steel.
