Well; my first forum message was not answered, but I have learned more. My engine starts fine and idles very well at the dock. After I pull away and gun the throttle it bogs and goes about 1/2 speed at most. My marine mechanic wants me to take the boat out of the water and bring it down as it sounds like a carborator problem; not spark. Does anyone know if there is anything I could do to check out on the three carbs before I take it to them? Any suggestions would be helpful.

You could check your cable linkages to verify if WOT is indeed WO. Go through your manual (Clymer, Solec, etc) and check your settings for idle, WOT, that all carbs are in sync, etc. Also verify your choke isn't getting stuck on. Are all the vacuum lines hooked up? Have your carbs been cleaned, rebuilt, recently? What do your plugs look like when you get back after it bogs down? (wet, dry, sooty?)

I believe that your mechanic suspects the engine is leaning out due to a clogged jet. If that is the case.... on high throttle blipping the choke will enrich the mixture and you should see a brief surge in the RPMs. If you observe this you cna rest assured your carbs need to be at the least disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Most mechnics will want to put a kit in the carbs with new float, needle and seat and gaskets and seals at the same time.

I had a similar problem on my old 87 Force 85. It was similar to FDB's but in my case one of the wires actially broke and I lost power to a single cylinder. I reconnected the wire and I had all 3 back again.
It broke at the terminal. I have no clue how it could happen, but it looks like there was enough vibration over the years to fatigue the metal in the wire to the point of breaking.

Nav

Thanks for the information. The problem is fixed. I ran the engine at the dock on high neutral and sprayed the gumout carb cleaner in all the carbs. Turned it off and sprayed them again and let them sit for at least an hour. The boat now runs great. Thanks everyone for all the advise

docbumper
