Hello all. New to the world of boating and now I own my first boat - 86 14' Bayliner with a 50 hp force on the back. got it cheap...

Took it out today... ran pretty good.. just two questions

1. How does the "push in" choke on the ignition work? Which way is full open?

2. How can I adjust the throttle stick so I do not have to push the stick so far forward to get the forward gear to kick in? Throttle is almost 45 deg before i feel the transmission "kick"

Re: Choke on 86 50 HP Force

Hi BenYSC! I have an 87 FOrce 50 HP that I just finished rigging up with a small fishing boat. I have a post in here about all the stuff a friend of mine and I did to get this old thing going, and I hope you can maintain yours well and not have to go through all these tedious repairs. I am not an expert. There are several on this forum though! They might advise you to get a new impeller or water pump installed and a new fuel pump, and to change the lube in your lower unit. This is good advice for an older outboard. To answer your questions:

1. The push in choke works as follows. Turn the ignition key clockwise one click to the "on" position, push in on the key, and while pushing in on the key, turn it clockwise again to the "start position." On my engine, the choke is either fully choked when using the key to activate the electronic choke solonoid, or fully open when not in use. FYI, I only need the choke when I first start it up for the day.

2. I am assuming that you have a US Marine throttle control. That is what I have as well. Mine goes into gear the same way, and that is that there is that much travel(about 45 degrees or so) between "neutral" and "in gear." Make sure you "snap" it into gear swiftly, as easing it into gear slowly is hard on the gears in your lower unit. Mine goes into forward gear at around 10:30 on the clock dial and is at full throttle (WOT) at about 8:30 on the clock dial. Also, if you pull straight out on your shifter, and then push it forward, it will allow you to give your engine some gas during neutral idle. It will not go into WOT in neutral; there is a lock out on the throttle tower under the hood which prevents full throttle in neutral.

Good luck!

Okay, so the throttle having to go almost to 10:30 is normal? If so, then I will learn to deal...Thanks!

So are you saying the choke automatically turns off as I am running the boat during the day (electronic choke)?

The choke is electronic however not automatic. When you push the key in to choke it the ignition switch is spring loaded as soon as you stop pushing the key in the spring inside the switch will push the switch out and the choke will open. Once motor is warmed up you should not need to choke it again for the rest of the day.
