How big is your garage?

I'm thinking about building a new garage and was wondering what size garage other people have. My requirements are that it must fit 2 cars (1 is an SUV) and my 19' boat. I'd rather go deep than wide because of the lot layout. For that idea I was thinking about a tandem garage. Any thoughts from current garage owners?

Re: How big is your garage?

I have a 21' x 21' garage and my boat is too friggin long. I wish I could go out the back. As a result, instead of it being a 2.7 car garage it has turned into a 1 boat garage :D

Definitely go deep --

Mine is 24'X20'. Fits one ute and one boat.

I suggest a 24'x24' with doors at both ends (one 20' and one 10')and a 12'X24' extension for the boat.

Re: How big is your garage?

if you want to be able to keep 2 cars and a boat, i'd go 24 X 40 at a minimum, because the lawn mower and bikes, and the stuff the wife wants to keep is going to end up in there. i've had 30X30 and 30X60. the 30x60 had a 12' door 20' from the end. we would back the boats in and turn them side by side, that left about 40 ' open for a great shop. the 30x30 you can get 2 boats one across the back one on the side and 2 cars, plus a space for the mower and bikes.

22' X 22' and I wish it was 24'wide X 28'deep, at least....Also wish the doorway was taller, so I could get my toon backed in there. Another foot would be nice...

Mine's a 22W x 30L. It holds 2 cars but you gotta' watch the door dings... lots of room at either end though. I had my neighbors 20.5' Monterey in it and it just fit.
So I think for a car, SUV and a boat you'd be good with a 36W x 32L.
The bigger the doors, the better.

Re: How big is your garage?

Previous house had a small 2 car garage 17x17. When I built a new one I thought it would be plenty big at 20x20. It's not. I'm wishing I had done 24x24.

Definately make it bigger than you think you need.I built 24 X 40 with a 8 ft cieling I would do 9 or 10 ft now.I did do an up stairs but between the wife and I we still don't have enough room.

Build the widest and deepest garage your lot and wallet can handle. Plan high doors to accommodate tall boats, trailers, or whatever. As JB suggested, I'd do a drive through if I could. I have never owned or even seen a garage that was too large. Have fun.

As big as your lot and finances can handle! I made a shed out back for odds and ends(not cars or boats). I'm glad I made it as high and as big as the lot allowed.

I think a good way to go is---think of the biggest you could ever possibly use and then go a little bigger than that.

BIG, BIG, BIG. I'm hoping to build a detached 4 car garage myself. Part for boat and Mustang and part for shop. Undercover shop is a necessity for anyone with projects in the PNW.

Re: How big is your garage?

I added one 22 x 25. It was deep enough, width limited by lot build line. I knocked out the bottom board of the monolithic slab prior to the pour and framed a 6 x 10 slab which later became an attached out building with shed roof. This is the best place for lawnmowers, rakes, stuff that scratches cars and boat. If you can do it make one side deeper for a length of boat and the other normal for cars and trucks. Creative shelving gets stuff off the floor.

2 car garage should be 30' wide. :)
That gives you 2, 9' doors with 4' between and on each end.
Then you need to build it 40' deep, so you can put the boat behind the SUV.
So. 30 x 40 should be good.

Mine is 28 x 36, and is a little tight.

Re: How big is your garage?

Garages are NEVER big enough. I have a 24 x 26 attached to the house mostly for the two daily drivers (with lots of room to move around and do some puttering), plus a 36 x 36 x 10 outside shop, which comfortably contains a crew cab pickup and and 68 F-bird resto project, an 18 foot boat, 2 place snowmobile trailer, garden tractor and other lawn implements, plus lots of industrial shelving full of "junk" as the wife calls it, still has enough room to spare as a nice work shop...depending on the size of the project.

And yet often I wish the 36 x 36 was a 36 x 40 just for a bit more breathing room when working on things...and if the stellar deal comes along on another project car or boat? It's gotta go outside 'cause I'm full.

Like I said earlier, they're NEVER big enough.

And something you may have not considered, but I would accept nothing less than a 10 foot ceiling in a garage. Mine is 10 foot and again I wish I had another foot once in a while while pulling engines and doing major resto project on cars...I'm often bumping the ceiling. And when I stand up in the boat my head often cracks one of the garage door openers! Another foot would let it clear. Speaking of...my oversized 8 foot high doors are also very nice, yet once or twice I've wished they were 9 foot. But it really just depends on what you're planning to do out there. Really take some time WITH A TAPE MEASURE IN HAND to think it all through before you do the deed.

Or just build it as big as you possibly can, you will not regret it.

Re: How big is your garage?

I have a 24x28, with a huge loft. Holds my Extended Chevy Van, 19 ft Chris Craft Super Sport, and there is a big work bench along with shelves. Everything fits, I can open the rear doors of the truck, and work at the work bench without moving the truck or opening the doors. I built the biggest I could. Recommend going with good concrete so the floor doesnt crack. They used a 3 inch slump and added Super plasticiser. Also, make sure you run cable tv to it, and a phone line. Important stuff!

Re: How big is your garage?

An important point is that site prep and foundation/slab are a big cost and they won't go up that much with additional size. Materials will be approx proportional to square footage, but since garages are petty simple relative to houses, labor will not be all that much more for a bigger garage.
