I have a 1990 90HP force outboard... the engine starts fine, but after 20 seconds or so of idling, the engine starts to make a "sneezing" sound.... which prevents me from usin' it? Does anyone know what is causing the sneezing sound?

The sneezing happens approx. every 4-5 seconds

Sneezing out the exhaust or back thru the carb?

Out the exhaust, likely a lean condition caused by either a clogged/dirty mixture valve in the carb, or it is just set too lean.

Out the carb, possibly bad/bent/stuck reed valves in the intake manifold.

I had something close to that on my 1986-85 HP motor, it turned out to be a blown transfer cover gasket, it is a very easy fix, just when you do the replacement ,do all 3 covers, as I found the other two were very spongy

I have a 1991 90hp and had the same problem. It turned out to be running lean. Clean the carbs and adjust the fuel mixture or get someone who knows how to do this.

But first, just try opening the idle jets another 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
