kinda a long story, but i'll try to shorten it as much as possible..but grab a cup of coffee lol

early january i ran my boat out of gas..called a mobile mechanic over and he checked the compression(checked good) and did a spark test , then said my fuel pump need to be rebuilt and a ignition coil was bad...he took the pump with him home...3 weeks later after numerous calls and appointments he finally shows up at my house while i'm at work and then calls me and tells me he put the pump back on and the coil and that it runs.....cost $175 parts and labor

couple days later i bring and drop the trailer in the water to check it out....it started right up....water pump was pumping fine..sounded good....then died out after about a minute...would not start again...sounded like it wasnt getting any fire/spark.

after waiting almost a month for the other mechanic i decided to bring it to a real mechanic shop and a coworker recommended his neighbor that works on boats...so i bring it to his shop, tell him the whole story of the engine troubles....then the guy starts telling me how he is getting sued by 2 different people because they are "claiming" he screwed up their motors...his mechanic looked like he was hung over and just came from a alley.....by this time i'm thinking to myself "why o why did you bring it here" so i think quick and tell him just to check the motor out and then call me before he does any work to it...that i dont want to spend alot of money on a old engine and that i'd prob just sell the whole boat if its bad .

well he calls me today and says my motor is blown and that i need a new power pack....he said the mechanic did a "cylinder air leak test" by putting air into the cyl and gauging the leakage and that it lost alot of air and it was prob my rings or piston that was bad and that it needed rebuilt plus power pack and it would cost $2800 to fix it..

so i tell him ..ok no problem..i'll go pick it up....he then asks me what i would sell the boat for , that a guy asked him about it and was interested in buying it...i told him $3800..i paid $4500 for it

i paid him his asking price for the checkup $60...and took my boat home.

i'm now wondering if i should bring it to another mechanic for a "second opinion" lol ....

anyone ever heard of the cylinder air leak test before?...all i hear about is compression checks...hate to doubt the guy but he seemed and looked shady from the beginning, was glad to pay him his money and take my boat lol

so i guess my choices are repower or sell...

my boat is a 1990 wellcraft 18 sport..here are some pics.

I would invest a few buck and have a real mechanic check it out.
Make an appointment at a Merc dealer and have it done by a qualified mechanic.

That test is similar to a compression leakdown test.
Not sure how much validity it has on a 2 stroke motor.
I wouldn't put too much faith in it myself.

Did they do a regular compression test?
Results?

Take it too a dealer.
Tell them to inspect, test, and diagnose. Start with compression, sparkplug and cylinder inspection. Then ignition. Ask them for an estimate of the time involved.
Tell them you need to know condition of motor before any repairs will be made.
They should be able to give it a good look-see for 1 or 2 hours labor cost.

Would you really sell the boat, or just part out the motor and hang a different one back there? Looks like a nice boat.

Re: 120 Force 1990 Advice

i'll try to get it to a real mechanic.. but i'm still trying to figure out what i want to do with it..would hate to pay more money to find out it not worth repairing :( ...i have $2500 put aside in a "motor fund" lol..so i'm not sure if it would be worth it to buy a new Etec 115 and put on this boat or start looking for a good used yammy 2 stroke....but i'd hate to buy someone else's problem again and be stuck in the same position i'm in now.

a new engine will prob run me close to $10k install with controls........but i could buy a whole new boat, trailer, motor for around 16k+...so kinda in a bind on what i want to do....i'd have to finance anyway on the motor.

Take it to a real mechanic if you can find one that will still work on force. Have them do a compression test and a spark test or do it yourself. A compression tester cost is 30 bucks at sears and is easy to do. If head is not damaged and electronics are working it may just be a fuel problem which is cheap and easy to fix. A leakdown test is a more accurate way to find exactly where the problem is in an engine and is usually used in a four stroke. A standard compression test will tell you the cylinder is fried and the leak down test will tell you where the cylinder is fried.

Kajun, keep us informed. I pick up my "new" used boat in two weeks. Can't wait to try it out and see how it performs. 120hp, 18' Maxum. Should be a good summer.

well..when i got home today ...i decided to hook a hose up to it and try to tinker with it and try to start it.....the dang thing started in 2 cranks!!! ...so i get all excited and trailer it down to the water and drop it in... starts right up....i let it run for prob 15 minutes....sounded good.....it would idle decently but as soon as i put it in gear..it would die...hmmm weird.....well who knows... prob need carbs cleaned or adjusted and maybe some more fuel sytem work, ....i'm still gonna bring it to that shop monday and let them check it out......

Re: 120 Force 1990 Advice

Sounds like my chrysler before I found Iboats. Same symptoms. Could idle but could not engage forward or reverse gear without it killing. Try choking it when you shift (if it has a standard choke) and see if motor improves or dies. If it improves it probably is a fuel related issue. I rebuilt carb and fuel pump and it took care of my problems. Yours is a bit different because of multiple carbs and link and sync. Most important test you can have done is compression test. If compression is good on all cylinders the motor is probably salvagabe without breaking the bank.

Re: 120 Force 1990 Advice

brought it to a new mechanic monday...yesterday he called to tell me i needed a power pack....cost for power pack from local parts store $440...i found one on ebay for $130..so i'm going to buy it....

it wouldnt even start for him....he did a compression check...108-110 psi and a spark test..#3 cylinder not firing..he said power pack should fix it..cost for motor checkup $100 ...when i picked it up i brought it too ramp and tried to start it... no deal...

so..i'm gonna buy that power pack and install it myself and hope it works.....then i'll need to clean or rebuild carbs....no more mechanic fees i'm gonna try to do this myself .....$300-400 i've spent so far on this problem , 3 mechanic's , 2 months down time and i'm still broke down.... i have a clymer's manual and i just bought a compression tester, multimeter and a spark tester tonight from autozone...gonna start learning how to work on motors this weekend :)

i looked in the clymers manual tonight about how to test the power pack..to find out which power pack is bad, couldnt find anything, just removeal and replace info...anyone know to do a test on one with a multimeter?

Re: 120 Force 1990 Advice

I dont know power packs but I have read a lot on iboats. First thing is the mechanic said number three is not firing. I believe the powerpack for number 3 has a spare hook up that is not being used. Seems to me one power pack fires two cylinders. If so you might be able to use the other part of the powerpack. I am sure someone better versed on force will help you out.
