Hey all,

I have been looking around on the internet for 3 things for my 87 Force. I am looking for a carb rebuild kit, startor, and Impeller. I have found two sites.. www.stemtostern.com and www.boatmotors.com . Anyone ever purchased anything from them or have some other sites? Also I noticed the startor was going for about $200 bucks.. That seems high to me but is it what i should expect? Any help would be great ...
thanks.

check out ebay. whatever it is that you want for force can usually be found for 1/10th to 1/5th of the dealer price.

Personally I hate giving mercury and mercury dealers even one cent in revenue. First, when you buy out another company's product and then offer it for sale the responsible thing to do is to continue product support for the normal period - which on engines is 20 yeers. Second they rape you whenever possible.

perfect example is my rectifier. I banged into mine yesterday and popped off a terminal. The product number is on side - EDI # FPI4040. The manufacturer specs are published online. It is a standard square bridge rectifier, 40A - 400V. http://www.edidiodes.com/pdf/Bridges/xPI.pdf.

So how much is a 40A square bridge worth?
mouser electronics sells an exact replacement for $4.29 (# GBPC4004)
mercury sells it for $35.35
online marine dealers sell them for $15.
florida west florida compponents sells a pair of 50A 1000V square bridges for $7.99. Quite a bit more than required, but they are in the neighborhood. In a place like richmond you could probably pop into an electronics surplus store and get one for $1-$2.

typical. so very typical.

oh, by the way ... don't know if you are into it, but everytime I do an impeller I also put in new gearcase seals. It's cheap and easy to do and the results of water in gearcase can be devastating.

gearcase spool bolts - AS568A-010
gearcase shift rod cover (original) - AS568A-041
gearcase shift rod cover (1st oversize) - AS568A-151
gearcase bearing cage - AS568A-139
gearcase spool cage (2 req'd) - AS568A-238

if you can use quad rings on spool, bearing, and shift cover they will vastly out-seal the original. Use standard buna-n 70 or viton. other materials don't withstand both oil and salt-water.

The oil seals are 1.125 x 1.75, two required. One for prop shaft and one for driveshaft. C-R seals use stainless springs and rings - p/n 11138

you can buy the mercury seal kit FK1063 for $59.
you can buy the exact same thing (buna70 0rings, SB profile oil seals) from american seal and supply - http://www.amseal.com/ for under $9

or you can take the extra money and buy better quality (Quad-rings and TB oil seals) for $19

if nothing else, you should spring the extra $5 for -151 and -139 quad rings on shift cover. The aluminum around impeller is rarely in prefect shape and quad rings excel at creating seals between imperfect surfaces.
