Another Computer, Another Delimma!

My son's computer had developed an on/off problem. It is an AMD running XP Pro. The computer began to not respond to turning it back on after a proper 'shut down'. My son removed the switch lead from the board and shorted the two pins. Voila, the computer started and it works every time we try it.

I checked the continuity on the normally open on/off switch and it works perfectly and consistantly. We then tried it using the 'reset' switch, plugged in to the on/off pins. It did not work either.

Any ideas??

I understand your fustration, but what you are describing, although logical, is "Imposable". There "Is" a problem in there somewhere, might even be a bad connection in the pins when they are plugged in.

Precisely my dilemma, LubeDude. It doesn't make any sense.

You only know the half of it DR. Was able to fix several issues without help. These things come in waves. We are, after all, just victims. ;)

btb, felt sorry for you fellows, not having a holiday to celebrate today, so I ate an extra bit of BBQ'd turkey and pecan pie for ya! Washed it down with a bit extra Chardonnay too! :)

You seem to have more computer problems than Bill Gates!

I had a similar prob a couple months ago - the tech who fixed it said it was heat related, after much testing and swapping out conponents (including both switches and mamma board) he fitted a second fan (charged me 20 bucks :D ) - prob solved.

Aldo

Sometimes a solder joint can become cracked, and will only work again once cool (solder joint contraction restores continuity). Just a thought.
