Little computer help please

I have several files that are trying to connect to the internet that I don't recognize. The firewall axes me if I will let them, but I always says no. Maybe they are part of something I need, and maybe they are something I can delete, dunno. If there's anybody that reconizes any of these maybe they can guide me in direction that won't hurt anything. Here's a list so far
CXTPLS.EXE
MOBVW.EXE
MCIOX32.EXE
CDDTSCH.EXE
CMGFILT.EXE
I don't let any of these onto the internet as far as I know, and there don't seem to be any problems. I always do the find file thing when the warning pops up, sometimes the response is that there is no file on computer by that name...Any help would be appreciated. Chief :confused:

Google each of those exes and see what it says about them. It's a quick and dirty way to figure out if they're nasties or not. EG, CXTPLS.EXE:
Click here.
Then upgrade your anti-spyware software and stop using IE and Outlook Express.

For some reason, people think firewalls protect them. They (hardly) don't. Mainly they just prevent the nasties from doing their job.

EDIT: Well, wipe the egg off my face please. It seems only the first has been heard of...

They might be the auto update programs for various software products you bought and/or installed looking for the latest updates.

I see you tried searches to identify them. Next time (if its win xp), be sure the "Search hidden files and folders" is checked, also "Search system folders" in "advanced options" of search.

Let us know what they are.

Good luck,
Mark.

cxtpls.exe --------->spyware
mobvw -------------->never heard of it
MCIOX32.EXE--------->never heard of it but MCIOX stands for "Nations Marsico Intl Opp Inv C", its the name of a company on the stock market.
CDDTSCH.EXE--------->never heard of it
CMGFILT------------->never heard of it

They are all more than likely some sort of adware or spyware since no results come up on google for them.
I would download, update and run AdAware from here>> www.lavasoft.de
Then download, update and run Spybot from here >> http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

If that doesn't fix everything up (it probably will), then you'll have to either delete them all manually or download a program called "HijackThis" which will make it a bit easier.

Thanks, you have told me what I thought you would, the first one has it's own folder and uninstall. Should I use the uninstall? The rest of them I can's find, but I'll keep looking. Thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming. I'm really computer dumb. Chief

Chief,
First things first....
What OS are you running?
Have you toggled on "Show Hidden Files and Folders" as Mark42 suggested?

With most spyware imbedded applications, if you remove the application, the spyware remains. If you remove the spyware component of the application, the application won't work.

If you're not familiar with the registry, it's best to leave it alone. I doesn't take much mucking around in the registry to hose your system.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Deleting them manually is not a good idea in my opinion if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Even if you delete the .exe files, there will be .dll files still there which could re-infect your pc almost immediately. The uninstall function may or may not work...its Spyware so ya can't really trust it to uninstall fully.
Free tools like AdAware and Spybot will do the whole job for you with minimum hassle.

Re: Little computer help please

If your not comfortable with going registry cleanups there is software out there called registry cleaner[google search]that will clean these peanuts,they look to be a varient or migration of a dynamic software you were trying to download.Like hotbar,bonzibuddy or smiley's plus many more that try to attach and retrive information .You can manually do it by backing up your registry on to CD's /then safe mode [F8 key]/click start/click run/type in regedit/ok/click on hkey _local machine/click on file [top of page]/go to find ,click/type in the 'exe's you want to find/ find them click on them back up to file,click then down to delete Lots of work lots >thats why the software is out there to save hours
