Started painting the new sheetrock last night. I did the storage and shop walls. Used old paint I had laying around just to use it up (pink and mint). What surprised me was that without any primer, two coats of satin finish latex gave complete coverage. The joints do not show through. I have not even had some primer work this well. This is the Home Depot Bear brand paint.

So I'm thinking to skip the primer in the living areas, and go right to work with the color coat in satin or eggshell.

Any drawback to skipping the primer if the satin covers so well?

Anything I can do to speed things up is a plus, it's only 9 weeks till Memorial Day weekend and I still have a hardtop to make for my boat. :D

Edited to correct "9 weeks until...."

I never primer....

Over the last year, I have really learned why that paint is soo much more expensive,... it's worth it!

The only thing I have ever primered was an old dresser I painted and some paneling I painted. Oh yeah, and my car.
A good quality paint on sheetrock should cover great without primer. I have had really good luck with Wal Mart, Color Place brand. My daughters rooms I did 2 coats over sheetrock and it looks great. My room I used 3 coats, but it would have been good with 2. This paint doesn't smooth out brush strokes as well as the high dollar paint, but using a roller it looks great.

Mark,

I'm not surprised the paint covered. Bear is VERY good paint. It may be a real "bear" (pun intended) covering pink and lime though. Those colors are notoriously difficult to hide.

I always prime "new" surfaces. The results of the job are directly proportional to the quality of the materials used.
