I have a 1991 Chevy S-10 with extended cab 4x4.
For the past week, a noise (which I think is coming from the tranny) sounds like a small rattle(only when I am driving it, not stopped or in park).
Now today the truck has the same small sounding rattle, but it also started making a grinding sound. These noises are all coming from around the tranny area.
What I am wondering is if anyone has had this happen to them and if so, what was the problem? Did you have to replace the transmission.
U-joints do not make this sound when they are ready to go, do they?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I have a manual, but it seems like it is no help at all.

One do you grease your u-joints if not or lots of mileage it is a good possibity they are worn ,if they are you should get a vibration either in drive or letting off the gas while driving, other spot to check is the inspection cover for the trannie might of dropped a bolt or just rubbing on flywheel, if your flywheel was cracked could also make it rub ,but you should notice a vib or starter whould act up sometimes

My s-10 loved to eat up u-joints. most of the time it would start with an occasional ping or click. That would turn into a squeaking noise and as time went on it would start to sound something like a Donkey...eee awww eee aww most pronounced at very slow speeds. At this point you best be getting them changed. Feel the u joints and see if they are getting hot under use.

Well, I took it to Mr Transmission today and found out that the tranny is okay and the u-joints are okay as well.
Turns out that when I had my brakes done last month, the caliper or something like that was rubbing on something.
Anyways, I am taking it back to the people who did the brake job tomorrow and they are going to fix it(for free!), and any damage it may have caused while I have been driving it for the past month.
I am just thankful it was not the tranny. It would have cost me $2000 to replace it.
I am going to check the u-joints regularly now, just because of what OMC said.
Thanks everyone for your input.

See.... I am good for something. :D Sounds are something that have always impressed me. A warm sunny day, an cold beer and the sound of an old pop'in john tractor starting out under load. It don't get any better then that!~

Re: 1991 Chevy S-10 tranny issues.

Well, I took it to "Speedy", the guys who did the brakes last month.
After taking it for a test drive and putting it up on the hoist and checking it out, they could not figure out what the noise is. They checked all the brakes, brake lines, calipers, everything visible.
Said they need a couple more hours to take the driveshaft out and see what's up with that.
They said they had put the driveshaft in, along with new CV joint, boot etc... So they are going to take everything off they put on, to see if it was their fault and if they did anything wrong putting it back together.
At least I do not have to pay anything, unless of course it is the front differential or something else.
Does anyone have any idea of what this could be?
The sound, coming from the front passenger side is a ting...ting...ting sound. (it sounds like a piece of metal is hitting another piece of metal that is turning). Then I hear grinding. It sounds like as if your brakes have worn down to just the pads. That kind of grinding.

After they look at it this Saturday, and if they can't find it, the truck will have to go to a differential shop. I do not know what else to do.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, B.C.

Well, it turns out that the front driveshaft was defective. Once they took it out, they knew right away that the driveshaft was the problem.
I did not see what the driveshaft looked like, but it did not cost me any money. It was all warranteed. Thank goodness.
