Has anyone used one of these TV ad wonders and if so do they actually work as advertised? I tend to shy away from miracle tools.

Yup, a friend gave me one for Xmas. Basically, it has a split tip. When it's bridged with metal (wires your soldering) , it heats up. The tips are rather broad and don't allow for real printed circuit work on a fine scale.

If it's like a shringe paste type you apply then heat it I've used them plenty of times in hard to reach locations but cold solder doesn't sound right

Re: COLD HEAT SOLDERING IRON

Aha and thanks, I just saved the $20, I have always used my soldering gun in this manner, I split the tip and use it as a resistance soldering gun, which is what the cold heat unit does. Works great on PL-259's, coaxial cable connectors. I don't recommend this on printed circuits, before the soldered connection is made the high current can accidently flow through the circuit between the wire and circuit board pad and ruin good components in it's path.

They intriged me also, I wondered how they worked. Guess that answered that mystery.
