I have a 4' easement behind my garage, which was pretty ragged looking overgrown with weeds and trees taller then me, with a ragged 6' privacy fence that fell apart as soon as it was touched...My GF and myself worked and got it all cleared out and I built a new fence last season and shortly there after we both came down with poison ivy something terrible,we both ended up going to the DR after we tried several OTC products.....The shot cleared it up after a miserable 2 weeks or so...This was last summer, This spring/summer I went behind the garage as more weeds were starting to grow again, and I used some Ortho ground clear and it killed everything back there after a week or so and it appears to work....You guessed it even with watching for the poison ivy and stuff, I still got a small bit of it on my leg...No where as bad as last yr as I was very cautious... It appears I have the ivy coming from behind my fence and the ground clear from Ortho didnt kill it.....

My question is after all this babbling is what can I do to permanetly get rid of the crap so I dont have to worry about going back there?

You could try a weed barrier or plastic over the ground and weeds. Then use some gravel untop to hold it down, not permanet but will work for awhile.

Good luck.

"Round-Up" works to the roots, but may take two or more sprayings. Don't weed eat it or burn it. Spray in the spring and then every new growth you see. It can be gotten rid of.
Get the shot early for more relief.

Some people are more suseptible to poison ivy, oak etc. If you burn it and breath it in you can get it.
What I would do is not use plastic but the landscaping cloth that lets water go thru but stops weeds as qaztwo says and cover it up. Then spray weed killer(roundup). Show no mercy.

We use Trimec Classic brand broadleaf herbicide on everything. You have to get it from a farmer supply store, but it's well worth it.One gal. will last several years.

Propane Weed Burners then put down some geotextile fabric covered with gravel. The weed burner will kill it and you don't have to burn it to ashes.

Round up is a temporary fix. The weeds will eventually come back.

Bob

We used to have a lot of poison ivy which we got rid of by spraying with a brush killer herbicide like Brush-B-Gon. Do not burn poison ivy--the fumes will irritate your lungs and you may end up in an ER.

There is a poison ivy/oka herbicide that works great. You could sterilize the soil.

If you use a herbicide put some diesel it it. May take two or three treatments.

Diesel will work, if you have tank agitation, or add an emulsifer to keep it from settling out(expensive).
Cheap solution is just add around an ounce of laundry detergent per gallon of mix. When spraying any herbicide, look at the leaves closly. If the spray is beading up on the leaves the herbicide is not going to work as well as it will with a little detergent added to help it spread and be absorbed into the leaves.
Most herbicides, especally Roundup, works best on new growth, but in your case I would suggest not cutting it off to get new growth, just stay with the spray.
Don't know if its still avialable, DuPont used to make a pellet brodleaf herbicide named Dybar(or Dibar)that was really good on poison ivy, just slow acting. It looked like chicken feed, sprinkle it over the area and the poison ivy would not come back the next year.
Good luck, be careful, my dad was extremly sensitive to poison ivy, once wound up in hospital with a form of chemical pneumonia from breathing smoke from it burning. Almost killed him.

Dave

Yea the whole burning thing is not good. If you are really sensative the fumes will act much faster. im so lucky to have gotten poison ivy and ciggars at the same time. ugh! (scratch) If you do go out though use ivy block its pretty good stuff eventhough its really thick.

Re: Poison Ivy/Oak...........

My experience with poison oak and ivy is that roundup will knock the leaves off it and make you think its dead but this isn't the case. Poison Oak/Ivy needs to be sprayed with a brush killer. Roundup up is a weed/grass killer not a woody stemmed plant/brush killer. I've sprayed oak and ivy with roundup only to have it come back.

I've used a cocktail of a brush killer and roundup with great success. Go to your local farm supply or nursery and tell them you want a brush killer and that will fix you up.

Side note: It takes a brush killer longer to work than grass/weed killer.

So which is it? Ivy, oak, or burning nettles?

At any rate, I would use ALL the solutions above.
And spray a ton of it on the other side of the fence too.
Is it someones yard, or a large woods?
In many areas, land owners are required to remove noxious and/or dangerous weeds. So the owner may welcome your help.

The guys are right on the brush killer. Poison oak/ivy are woody plants. Plain herbicide won't get it.

Some Round-up products are not good on anything that comes back from the roots or has a massive root system like nut grass and wild Violet. You have to kill all f the root to eliminate poison oak and ivy. If you do not kill the root there will be new growth sent up from the live root.

When I was a young kid, I would get Poison ivy all the time. Dad started washing my arms and legs with either lacquer thinner or gas. After getting washed with his method, I never caught it. Something about petroleum distilates breaks down the poision ivy's properties.

I'm not saying try this because it can be dangerous. I'm just saying what works for me.

As for the plant itself, try tilling the soil up and then use the brush killer. Sometimes continually tilling the soil, the plants will die off without any herbicide.

Not an expert, but roundup is a translocator. It travels to the roots. It will kill just about anything if sprayed on the leaves in 80+ degrees. It will take more than one application on woody material.
I am sure there are better products out there but it also doesn't leave harmful residue in the soil and is non-toxic for the human applying it.
