I'm running Windows 98 SE and my problem is that I can't shut windows down.
When I enter "start" and then shutdown all it does is re-start.
How can I fix this so it actually shuts down?

How long has it been since you reformatted your hard drive.

Duh? I haven't the slightest idea. Doesn't reformat erase all that I have on it? Don't really want to do that.

Re: Computer won't shutdown

greenwing is on to something. I have ME and I had tons of lockups and had to shut computer off by the power switch then when I would start it back up I had to wait for pc scan to do its thing. I did not do a re format however I reloaded my operating system and it runs a lot better

Try pc mechanic I believe it is 4.0 and they will let you run it for 30 days for free. I bet it finds at least 300 registry errors and invalid shortcuts. If that dont fix the problem try to reinstall your operating system. Problem is if you have dial up it will take awhile to get all the upgrades

I use to have ME also and it would get to where it wouldnt shutdown or anything right so I would format the hard drive and reload the OS and it usually fixed everything for awhile. Glad you found a fix.
