Say, Hypothetically, someone wanted to set up a 75 gallon aquarium with a few black sea bass, sea robins, stuff like that. What would they, hypothetically, need to do to the water to keep them alive? Other than a sufficient filter that is.

Just wondering, hypothetically....

Re: Marine Aquarium

well i am not real familiar with those fish. but i know for certain you would need to know the type of food they eat and be able to provide that or something real close to it to them. some wild caught fish will adapt to dry food some wont. some just need the live stuff to chase. i have kept native wisconsin fish in a 125 gallon aquarium for a couple years at a time. mostly blue gills perch sunfish and a couple largmouth bass. the gills and the sunfish would eat dry fish pellets but the bass never would. also you will need to know what salinity these fish prefer and keep the water salted as close as possible. this in not hard to do at all. also you are going to want to duplicate the habitat as close as possible. like i said i am not familiar with either of the fish you mentioned and not sure if they can be kept in an aquarium for very long.
good luck and keep us posted if you try this.

Sure it can be done and you could dump a bit of toxic waste in the tank.... some exhaust fumes a few chemicals.... the fish will never know they left the Jersey Shore waters!

Yeah I'm thinking if I get natural NJ fish, I'd have to do something pretty extreme to kill them off. Better than those damn delicate pet store fish. :D

75 gallon tank may be to small for them. If some speicies are in too small a tank they will die. They become lithagic and will not eat.

Salt should be at 1.2 specific gravity and add some aqualith for slime and some of the trace elements. Biggest problems with salt tanks is the algee. You got to clean the glass and the crushed coral every day or it looks brown. Instead of crushed coral for the bottom get dolimite. Lots cheaper. YOu should run an underground filter and a power filter on the back. Water changes every month. Start tank with crap fish till you get through the nitrification process. At first ammonia is high and you need to get past that step before your tank stops killing fish. If you are using tap water make sure you are using a chlorine killer. Real expensive hobby. I dont recommend it. Maybe get an aquarium screen savor for your computer. Lots cheaper.

OK then maybe I'll stick to the freshwater. It's just that I have the tank set up, empty, with the filter going to age the water. I was out on the reef the other day and caught a sea robin, about 5 or 6 inches long, and thought wow that would look cool in the fish tank.

I'll stick with the blue channel cats probably then or some other catfish. I like them a lot and they're about impossible to kill. :)

Re: Marine Aquarium

My old man had a really, really big tank a few years back. It came with the house he lived in at the time. Had a couple of bass, a few bream, and an albino channel cat. Introducing a few live minnows into the tank was much fun to watch. The bream were much more aggresive than the bass.

Re: Marine Aquarium

You might want to re think it since if they are native fish to that region it is illegal to keep them as "pets" I have a 75gal, 30gal, and 10 gal saltwater tank. In the 75 i had a crappie, largemouth and some bluegill then i found out from the DNR guy that it was not a good idea and was illegal to keep them. if you do use a penguine or something that has a bio wheel that will grow the healthy bacteria that the tank will need. For rocks go with one pind for every gallon or so, and get salt that is for tanks and not table salt.

Check out this site . It is an iboats caliber resource for fishkeeping and all about aquariums. As mentioned by skeeterboy, it is illegal to keep gamefish in an aquarium. Check your local game and fish regs just to make sure.

Good Luck.

Hey Stiff, you need to check out the move "Gone Fishin'" with Danny Glover and Joe Pesci.

Jersey fisherman that fish in a toxic creek/river.
I think it is Pesci that wears a t-shirt referring to the Jersey waters.
