Alright, I have my box, now what do I do to make the splice legal.

Both wires into the box, wire nuts, and then tape?

Any lugs or grommets in the box holes required?

Its inside my house under the sink, going to the dishwasher.

Ken

May need a way to keep the wires from being pulled out of box and breaking the splice. Other than that sounds good.

Romex connectors in box access holes. They serve as stretch/strain relief bushings.

Its inside my house under the sink, going to the dishwasher.

Ken

Re: A code legal wire splice

what kinda box.. metal or plastic..??

a metal box must be grounded with a ul green 10-32 screw.. wrap the bare ground 3/4 wrap around an tighten..

also if'n metal box.. MUST HAVE cable clamps ..i.e. romex connectors for the wire to enter the box an get clamped/tightened..

more then one wire/cable can pass thru the same rx connector..

if'n plastic box,, no ground/grounding screw is needed/required.. an same with no connectors are needed..

whatever box.. the wire/wires must be stapled/strapped/secured at no more then 12 inches away from the box..

no less then 6 inches of wire is required to be had/left after the finished splice,,, from the outside edge of box.. NOT INSIDE..
strip wire 3/4 inch.. twist tite with pliers.. snip little to make even edge.. apply wire nut an plier tite..

make sure no exposed copper .. tape is a good option but not required.. instead of pull/snap the tape flush at finish.. twist the tape roll some an the pull/snap.. this leaves a tag ( to remove ) if'n down the line someone needs to remove the wire nuts..

always install cover of box..

Re: A code legal wire splice

Thanks guys, I have a plastic box. I will staple the wires.

Stupid me, forgot the cover, will have to go back.

I will need to get wire clamps for my breaker box. There are several romex wires coming out with no clamps at all. The are just wating to be chaffed.

I think some fly by night guy did all the wiring, very little of it is up to code.

Ken

Check all the connections in the panel. They should be (very) tight. Don't forget the neutrals.
