Good Morning Everyone!

The "do-it-yourselfness" of iboats inspired me to service my car's transmission (1999 Ford Taurus SE V6), the tranny pan has AXOD Metric stamped on it. Just turned 100k miles, bought it at 40k miles, not sure if it's been serviced before.

I unbolted and drained the pan, and saw what looked like grease stuck to the pipe indicted by the large arrow. I went to wipe it off and the pipe freely moves up and down, including the vertical pipe welded to the top (shown by small arrow).

So..... Is this pipe supposed to move?

What could the greasy substance be?

Thank you.

doesn't seem like it should move up or down, but the filter doesn't touch or mount to it, as far as I can see. I don;t see where you have any choice other than to replace the filter, put the pan on & fill her up. What are your options: tow it to a garage where they can say, "gosh it won't survive the day", or worse, "nah they all do that" Others may know Fords to give those opinions on here.

Re: Ford Taurus AXOD Tranny Question

I did exactly that... bolted 'er up and such.

I have never serviced a transmission before, I have always taken my cars in for that. I was amazed to see the pan magnet coated with goo. I don't know how much is typical but it's surprising to see it your first time!

I will see if someone familiar with this part knows about the pipe... maybe Dolluper?

Thanks TilliamWe

I've got the same Trans. in my Taurus, I've changed the fluid several times and never have noticed the loose pipe on my trans. As far as the goo, I believe that would be clutch plate wear accumalation.

Re: Ford Taurus AXOD Tranny Question

Hey there guys!

Thanks for the info. The oil line was coated with pasty (not that kind ;) )gray with a little black in it.

The pan magnet was grayish black.

I wonder, is there a way to empty the torque converter this way, or must the tranny be removed to do it? The reason I ask is, the manual states 12 quarts of fluid, but it only took 6 to refill, then it hit me *torque converter*!

As for frequent changes... why not have a pan drain plug installed, that would be so much better?

With a drain plug, you wouldnt be able to clean the magnet off....

Re: Ford Taurus AXOD Tranny Question

Heytown think it's time to find a new mech, they have been sealed a very long time,or cracked and leaking,we have cut them in half replaced broken or bent vanes and rewelded them.
azfyrfyter63....the flush will clean out the torque but the backyard method is to pull off the return line [by rad] wheels off ground [front in your case] start car and put in drive let idle, pour in fuild [through dip]till you have used req amount[big drain pan] then shut her down ,reconnect line ,check fuild level .To high pull line off run again.....

Re: Ford Taurus AXOD Tranny Question

I just posted on jc1933 message about tranny fluid.

Definately flush the torque converter when changing the fluid. Otherwise the fluid in there will contaminate the new fluid.

Just dropping the pan to change that fluid is better than not changing it, and will work for a while.

Ford Crown Vic's have a big problem with fluid. The fluid will look perfect, but the car will vibrate at high idle under no load like idling down the street at 25mph. I have serviced a lot of these trannys and got the vibration out of them, it feels like a rear end slipping. But is the converter is not flushed, then within 5,000 to 10,000 miles the shakes are back.

That is on cruisers which see harder driving conditions, but will have the same effect at higher miles on every car.

AZ,

Pulling the pan is fruitless. You're changing 25% of the fluid-maybe.

There really is no reason to ever remove the pan.

A flush is in order, for a full change.

I agree with DJ. I am a HUGE DIY person for most everything. And a long retired auto mechanic. But in my opinion, tranny fluid changes are not something that are worth doing yourself. Take it to a qualified mechanic and give them the $100 bill to put it on their expensive flushing machine to get it done completely and correctly. Doing it in the backyard gives you a half job for a lot of hassle. And doesn't save all that much cash.

When you refill it, count the quarts you put in to bring it up to the correct dipstick level. It will probably be nowhere near the capacity of the system...then you'll see how little you actually changed.

I believe you said at one time this one had 90K on a first tranny change...you need more than a partial change. I'd recommend you take it somewhere. Good luck!
