Hey guys!! I have an old wood stove that I would like to replace the chimney but only the section that immediately exits the stove on the top and goes to the ceiling.Im not sure if I can just remove that part. There looks to be a round collar on the ceiling that the stack goes through with a round section the extends down to meet the chimney,Kind of the shape of a round brimmed hat if you held it up to the ceiling with the stack going through the middle. There is a 3 ft section that goes through the attic and a 5 ft section out of the roof.It looks like the stainless doubled section starts in the attic. The part that I want to replace is a single layer stack.Any one do this before??I dont want to get in too deep and make more trouble than I already have.Charlie

For safety reasons I would run the stainless double wall at least down through the ceiling if not already.(that hat shaped thing is most likely the beginning of the double pipe and also acts as a hanger)
Stove pipe isn't really that hard to replace.
make sure the female side is up and I always drill and screw mine together and install a damper down near the stove. Any hardware store should be able to help you out.

Charlie..it soundslike you have a metalbestas chimney, from your ceiling up through your roof. There should be a clamp ring or even a couple of screws holding the single wall pipe on.If possible when you replace the pipe...you should add another lenght of metalbestsa from the collar down....its not a good idea to have the single wall pipe going up to the ceiling.othere than that its not that difficult to replace the stove pipe. The only other thing is you might want to add a damper in the pipe to control to much draft...if this problem exist.

Thanks for the replies guys. There is a damper about half way between the stove and the ceiling. What I dont know is how the single stack from the stove to the ceiling is attached to the rest of the double stack in the attic.I held the damper and turned a little and the single stack moved pretty easy.Charlie

It should just be Slid up into place,......

You've got to Lift the pipe off the Stove about 3/4" to clear the collar,... Maybe more on Your Stove,.......
Then move the pipe to the side,+ lower it out of the Ceiling Thimble........
Watch out for the Soot that's going to fall in your Face,............ :D

Re: wood stove stack/chimney removal

Not sure if the systems used in Canada are the same as in the States but I have a transition pipe/adapter that converts from the black stove pipe to the double walled stainless pipe. It fits into the female end of the stainless pipe and turns and locks in place. The other end connects to the standard black stove pipe.
I always use screws to hold the sections together - its a code requirement here. Any pipe that passes thru a structure (ceiling, roof etc) must be the insulated type and an insulation shield must also be used in the attic area. Here, the insulated pipe must extend below the ceiling a minimum of 18".
I had the fire department come and do an inspection on mine for insurance purposes.
