I have never had a laptop but now I need one that I can drag around with me, something that can go global. Is there any significant difference between them, other than some bounce and some splat when dropped? Anything in particular (features or functions) that I should consider?

Note: an Apple laptop is not a consideration. I need Windows based os.

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

Been using Dell laptops for about 6 years. Toshiba before. My son bought a Toshiba about 2 years ago, when I bought my current Dell. He's had nothing but problems. The Dell's performed flawlessly.

Get a Dell Inspiron for home/office, or Dell Latitude for commercial/industrial. Also, BE SURE and opt for the 3-year on-site extended maintenance. Hopefully you won't need it, but it helps whenever you call in for questions or problems.

Oh, and none bounce very good when dropped.

personal opinion... stay away from compaq and whatever you get make sure it has AMD processor.
once again this is only my opinion. The celeron processors are typically slower than the others and the pentium processors have more problems with lockups and freezing.

Dell is good, Toshiba is good with the exception of that they like celeron processors. HP is good cept their line of compaq's. and I've got a sharp that is the best one I've owned yet.

Try out the new Dell convertible so you can tell me what its like :D ... I want one of those next.

Solution is here.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Whatever you get, get it big, get a mouse, get wireless, and get a really good case to carry it in.

and an extra battery, I have a DELL, I like it and would recommend it. Upgrade the RAM from 256 to 512 if you can, also be sure it's wireless like someone already stated.

Complete and total BS. Intel Pentium (or Centrino used in laptops) is top of the line. There's a reason they cost more. There's a reason every single mission critical computer in the world uses Intel chips. You will find no AMD processors at NASA. You will find no AMD processors in the US military. You will find no AMD processors running nuclear power plants. You will find no AMD processors in the servers running corporate websites. They're all Intel for a reason.

Of course the Celerons are slower, that's their purpose. They're cheaper. It's like comparing a Honda to a Corvette. Of course the honda is slower and uglier - it's still reliable and will get the job done.

As for what laptop you should get, without a doubt Dell. About 2 years ago I bought my first new laptop. A Toshiaba. It was such a POS that I had to return it to the store 3 times to get a different one before I said just give me my money back. Each time there was a different problem.

Then I tried to buy a Gateway. It was shocking how horribly they treated me. I ended up loosing about 50 bucks for no reason and when I found myself SCREAMING at a manager over the phone I decided to cut my losses and move on. Their computers don't have a great reputation either.

Then I bought an HP. It was ok. Good value. No problems. I sold it about a year later and bought a Dell because Dell was having such a good deal I could buy a new laptop for the same price I could sell my year old HP for!

The Dell is great! I use it several hours a day and it has held up really well. Overall it seems to be much higher quality than the HP was. Their warranty is unbeatable. I strongly recommend paying extra for 3+ years of warranty. Anything happens and you have a new part delivered the next day.

Wireless is definately the way to go. I love sitting out on my deck in the summer while posting on the internet. Right now I'm relaxing on the couch. :D

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

I bought a Dell from the dell refurbished site. It took a bit of hunting but got a great deal on an inspiron, centino, wireless, dvd...it had almost everything. I upped the memory to 784 mg (very cheap from crucial.com)

No problems with the laptop and the dvd is removable and that bay can be used as a 2d battery bay.

They're all Intel for a reason.
Yes and it has nothing to do with being better it has to do with the Illegal corrupt Business practices of Intel.
AMD finally struck back and sued INTEL in June, Intel is now in the process of explaining in FEDERAL COURT why it needed to force OEMS NOT to use AMD by using bribes and threats. And, Alas, look at the effect! AMD's CPU revenues have grown 26% in one quarter after the lawsuit. :)

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

I never said AMD was bad. I've had several of them. For the price they are good. They ARE cheaper for a reason. Not just the CPUs, but the entire intel chipset is just plain more reliable and runs cooler. That is why you find them in mission critical applications. The US military couldn't care less about Intel's advertising, but Intel is all they use. The same is true for medical equipment, NASA, and anything else where alot of money rides on the CPU.

Large corporate websites have huge internet hosting budgets. They buy the best servers money can buy because any second their website is down they lose money. These kind of places ONLY use Intel servers. (or other alternatives like sun)

In a home computer you will never notice a difference between the two. Somebody could sell you an AMD and call it an Intel and you'd never know until you opened it up. To say something like "the pentium processors have more problems with lockups and freezing" is absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

Without turning this into a AMD vs Intel argument.... The Dual Core AMD Optron server processors are absolutely unbelievable. They are considerably faster than any P4's out there. The large corporate monstrosity I work for is buying them for SQL servers and Windows Oracle boxes.

OK, original question about laptops.... The previously mentioned corporate monstrosity I work for buys IBM (Lenovo) T42 laptops. They are a bit pricey but extremely solid. I have used an IBM for the last 4 years and have been extremely satisfied. They purchased Dell laptops many years ago, but with the cheap plastic they did not last long. I can't comment on the quality of the Dell's in the last few years. Based on the positive feedback from people here, they must have improved.

Scooch

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

Lots of good info!!! This is what I’m getting from the responses so far:

- Dell is good, HP is a possible second choice but pricy, stay away from a Toshiba w/Celeron and Compaq.

- If buying a Dell (Latitude D810 or Inspiron 9300) get the optional 3-year ext warranty.

- Get a second battery. (I like the idea of a 2nd batt fitting in an empty drive bay)

- Get wireless.

- Get a mouse. (hadn’t even consider that)

- Upgrade RAM to 512mb.

- Roscoe owns a lot of Apple stock.

- ZmOz will buy any laptop.

Question: Where does the IBM ThinkPad fit into the mix, or does it?

i've had my gateway m675 for about 2 years and love it. much too big for a portable laptop, but i use it as a substitute for a desktop, and move it all over the house. like i said, love it, no problems. one warranty issue with the charger, which gateway resolved in less than a week.

It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. :D

They're good, but about 50% more expensive then dell.

One thing that made me like my Dell more than the HP was because the Dell has a smaller screen. 15" screens on any brand are just big. Much happier with my 14.1" screen.

If you get a dell look around the internet for various deals and coupon codes. I've bought several new computers from dell and made money with them on ebay with the right coupon.

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

I have had a compaq, toshiba, dell and now a thinkpad

Think pad is good - they have a keyboard lite that you can use to light up the keyboard which is pretty cool.

I saw a Sony the other day that built in WAN access via Verizon - it had a built in cell phone technology - so you had high speed interent wherever there was verizon signal.

That way you do not need wireless hot spots - you can roam the US.

You can add this feature to your laptop via the card slot.

Also the IBM can protect itself if you drop it when it is running - however I dont usually drop my laptops when they are running.

Todays wall chargers come with an adaptor to plug them into the car as well - which is useful when traveling - of course if you have a regular ac/dc car adaptor you can use that as well.

The thinkpad is missing the windows key which is a pain.

All of the laptops I have ever had an intel - the centrino is the latest one.

Also the thinkpad has a built in finger print reader for user and password very secure.

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

This is a rather subjective topic, but I have had several laptops (IBM, Dell, Compaq, HP) and by far the best yet has been my current Compaq EVO N800C (heavy). I think the specific use of the machine plays a huge role in thier reliability. There is a big difference between a loptop which spends 90% of its life on the desk, and the laptop that spends 90% of its life on the run. To make them light & small enough to travel they cut corners. It affects long term survival.

All of my laptops have been Intel based systems, as corporate purchases. As for my personal preference for a processor .... my user name says it all. :)

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

I have two Dell laptops, the one problem i had was fixed the next day. My hardrive fried due to an overheat issue ( pretty much my fault). I went online with my other Dell (less than a year old/ Latitude variety) and talked to a Dell tech. The next day a shiny new hardrive and operating system arrived and the laptop i am using this moment and for the past 2.5 years came back to life (Inspiron). I would reccomend Dell to almost anyone.

One of my jobs at Best Buy is that I am a Functionality II person, so I deal with things when they malfunction and set up most of the displays like the speaker walls, lcd tvs, projos, computers etc. (I run all the cables and feeds from the main boxes etc then set up the unit) I personaly have set up about half of the laptops in my store and I really really want to buy the new sony vio. they to me seem to be some of the best laptops on the market, but also the most expensive.

Some things you may also want to consider

1. Dont just get any mouse, get a nice optical wireless one.

2. Consider a Chill Mat if you are like me and use your laptop on a flat desk for long periods of time.

3.I got a DVD burner with mine, and I love it.

4. Get yourself a nice set of POWERED computer speakers.

Re: Need Laptop Suggestion

I thought I heard that there was one type of processor (forget which one, let alone which company) that is particularly efficient and therefore a real advantage when it comes to length of battery charge time in a laptop. Might be worth doing some researh on the tech sites to see if this is true.

I have heard that a good extended warranty is worthwhile for laptops (as compared to almost any other product) because the batteries are so expensive. If yours dies during the extended warranty period (which it has a good chance of doing if you use it alot), you get another one at no cost. And I think a new battery usually costs more than the warranty.

As far as getting a deal, bookmark and scan the forum below. I've seen quite a few posts listing awesome deals on Dell laptops.

http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=40

That would be the Intel Centrino. That's another thing about AMD - they are not well suited to laptops. They run warmer and use more power - two things you do not want.

Yep, very cost effective. No matter how well you treat your laptop batteries, lithium ion batteries will only last about 3 years max. Plus if you drop it or something along the way they'll fix that too!

If you get a 4 year full replacement warranty from dell they have to replace the laptop after any sort of accident. If in 3.5 years you "accidently" drop your laptop on the freeway, you get another one! And in 3.5 years your laptop will be out dated and no longer available to replace - so you'll get a brand new updated one!

lol sorry to fire you up there Zmoz but like I said in my post, Just my opinion.

Oh and

"In a home computer you will never notice a difference between the two. To say something like "the pentium processors have more problems with lockups and freezing" is absolutely ridiculous."

I formed my opinion from somewhere... and I believe it was from personal experiance. I've built a fair few computers in my time and gone through a bunch of both pentium and AMD.

Still just my opinion and it still stands as previously stated. :D
