Several years back we had Cellular One. Our phone crapped out and the contract had ended so we switched to Verizon. Can ya hear me now? Nope, no service in my area. It would either not let us use it at all or it would give us a message "Message VR5 BR1, We're sorry but you are not a Cingular customer." I had a 2 year contract with them. I finally got out of it with 8 months left, no charge thankfully. We could only use it about 30 minutes a month, and that was when in Waco or Dallas. Today we went to Alltel. Bought both my wife and me new phones. Works GREAT in Waco and that area. Come home and it flips Digital/Analog and shows roaming. As long as my roam is flashing I'm not charged. When it goes solid I get billed for calls. Well sitting here I can call my home phone. We decided to try to call each other. Both phones show Digital roaming (but blinking so no charge). Any takers on what happens? "Message VR5 BR1, Verizon Wireless. You are not a customer and cannot cpmplete the call" !@#$%^&@#$%^&*#@$%^&*#@$%^&*#$%^&*()$%^ We HAD verizon and canceled because it would say we were on Cingulars tower. Now I have Alltel and it says I'm on Verizons tower. What the !@#$% is a person to do? <br /><br />I think I'm gonna return it all and go to radio shack. A couple of 40 channel cb's and a base unit for home. A little tuning and upping the amps up to about 25 ought to do it.

Two soup cans and string would be high tex enough,probably hear each other and no contract to sign....Good Luck cell phones can be a pain

HAM radio, then you don't get jail time for amping a CB. HAM can be earned now WITHOUT morse code!

buy T Mobile if your not in coverage in their areas they have a contract with cingular so you use their towers instead... no roaming not ever. NO problems with their customer service and with the 6 dollar option you never get charged for calls from your phone to hers. Not even if your over you plan minutes.

You are on the edge of 2 or more towers - where one is service and the other tower someone elses.<br /><br />You can do a few things<br /><br />1 is try to locate the alltel tower<br />2 get some type of antena booster that could help<br /><br />You can look for a full 3 watt phone for home use that would certainly pick up the cell tower signal<br /><br /><br />Just recently verizon bought AT&T and sold some of the towers off<br /><br />In my house if I went to one end of the house it was Alltell if I went to the other end of the house it was verizon.<br /><br />My alltel plan says anywhere in the Carolinas is NOT roaming, regardless of what is says on the phone itself.<br /><br />Good luck

If Verizon bought AT&T then who owns Cingular? Who bought the towers from Verizon? Who in the blue blazes is ALLTELL?

Nope. Canceled my Alltel service Monday. It worked 95% of the time. It was also gonna charge me for roaming on about 95% of every call I was gonna make. I just happen to be in the 10 mile radius area that is roaming out of about 90% of Texas. Cellular One is coming next, after that its the ham radio.
