AMD... exactly..

When I'm changing my propane, I expect LHT...

When I chagned the belt on my '94 S-10 Blazer, It wouldn't loosen, so I tried the other way, as it was a single axis and would make sense there for LFT, and it was.

I changed the saw blade on our cutoff saw, LFT, and no problem.

But on 8 lugs on a stupid truck??

ZmOZ, Your darn tootin! Shuda wuda.

Guys, some lug nuts have to be left hand thread because if they were right hand thread they wouldn't screw on to the left hand threaded lug bolts. DUHHH

Re: Left Hand Threads on Lug Nuts

I hesitate to admit it but just a couple weeks ago the grinder and I got into it over the very same issue. As many times as I have changed the wheels on those spindles over the years you’d think it would have sunk in that there is a left handed thread on one of them. A gentle turn in the wrong direction and she came right off.

And you are right about the “a bigger hammer will fix it” mentality being quick to surface when a unknown (or unremembered) left handed thread is encountered.

Confession time. We (aussies) converted to metric in the early 70's.

I still find myself converting it back to imperial. A 2by4 will always be a 2by4 (50by100 just don't sound right :( )

hey duna in Aus it is a 4X2 only in America do have 2X4's actually in Aus it is a 4 b 2 as we never say "by" so next time you want to get some timber, try Bunnings and ask for some 2 by 4 and see how you go!

OH and by the way, fish always seem to be bigger in pounds, and, of course trout would never be weighed in kilos, no siree when you go from acres to hectares, you loose half your land, gallons to litres you use 5 times as much petrol, miles to kilometres, you live too far away from anything! (just joking of course)

Back in the 50's many if not all Chrysler cars used left hand lug nut threads, install a few of these (with LH studs) on all four wheels of a non Chrysler car with RH threads and the tire thieves were pretty much outa business,, ;)

Re: Left Hand Threads on Lug Nuts

Conscientious! That's my motto. So while doing the brakes I takes my coveted studs-pressed-in 53 Willys pickup replacement hubs along with the 2 good originals to a well posed local mechanic (NAPA was backlogged -- he had a cool press) and orders all new stud sets. Decided to keep the original left hand scheme on left-side hubs to maintain antique-Jeep-coolness (What was I thinking?)

So when I comes to pick them up he tells me the only LH studs he could find came with different (wrench) size nuts  and besides, he couldn't get enough so only one wheel done LH.  3 Others RHT except he was able to match the odd size nuts for one other wheel so I could be consistent on each side.

I hate to overdue the little thinglies in this post but I thought I was listening to Gracie Allen in coveralls and was literally unable to speak. I just paid and got the H outta there -- in fear for my sanity.

I know, you'da straightened him out. Right, and your first sentence would'a been???

So I carry a star wrench and go by feel. But I never thought about noelm borrowing my ol' truck, and possibly freezing out there for a second night! Now I'm worried... ;)

Re: Left Hand Threads on Lug Nuts

The proper way to remove a left hand lug nut is to get the biggest impact wrench available and turn in a clockwise direction until it comes off. Then install right hand lugs and nuts. :D

I reckon that they should just put a couple of left handers on each wheel just for kicks and to keep everyone on their toes!

Did my break job Sat evening, took 4 hours from pull into garage until I backed out. My brother the mechanic sat in a chair and guided me through the process. 3/4 ton truck adds about 3 hours to the job

noelm, so close to my own name..

Originally posted by Dunaruna:
noelm, I think that caught a lot of people off guard initially, many a wheel stud was snapped off!

If my memory serves, the L/H nuts had a small groove cut into the edges of the flats (the bit that the socket grabs) to define it as a L/H thread.
That was the first thing that came to my mind. How could he not have twisted the bolt in two.
I had a trailer hitch ball that I could not get off - turned the wrong way and snap.

Not only do we use both but some wrench sets include fractional sizes to close fit metric. :(
Nuther movie for you. Canadian Bacon. ;)

Re: Left Hand Threads on Lug Nuts

back in the 50 the ford pickups withe the 5.5on 5 lug bolt pattern were bad to losen off on the left hand side Ford didnt go to the left hand pattern to cure it but chrystler did on some of thier 1950s models. I dont know why wheel the ran off on that side but they did. I found out it was common knoledge after loosing a wheel going to school.
