Another day, another Ebay scam

I use Ebay a lot. Got a new scam today via email I hadn't seen before.

I had placed some bids on a lawn tractor recently and did not win the auction....I was the 3rd highest bidder. Next day I received an email that looked very official and had Ebay logos, a link to the item, etc and stated a "second chance offer" was being made to me to buy the item for my highest bid. Stated that the winner was unable to complete the transaction and therefore I was being given an offer.

This turned out to be completely fraudulent as the winning bidder DID follow through with the purchase and the seller never sent me an official second chance offer (I called the seller who lived in my hometown and we discussed this fact.)

So I reported it to spoofs@ebay.com and they replied back confirming that it was indeed a fake email.

So beware everyone...

How can you tell the difference? Ebay will only offer second chance offers through your messages that you see after you sign into "my Ebay." If the offer isn't in there, the email is fake. Period.

I received an e mail from someone saying there was a problem with my account and I had 48 hours to correct it. The next day I got a second e mail thanking me for notifying Ebay of my concerns but not to worry because the e mail was legitimate. I had never notified Ebay about the first email. I guess they thought that I would and respond to their second email. Were they ever wrong.

There is an easy way to verify if you are on ebay. Get the ebay toolbar. I'm trying to sell a Canon XL2 and had had to re-list it twice. First person didn't want to pay and the second said she was from Maryland, (the address didn't exist) visiting London, and wanted me to ship to Nigeria!
So far, in all my internet experience, (since 1991) nothing good has ever come from Nigeria. Ebay has credited my listing fees, but the time lost, and the hassle I've had sure is a pain in the ***.

Dan
