Some of you know that I am starting a rebuild on my old dodge (1984 royal SE) with a 318. I have not done anything like this in well 30 years! I am looking at a new cam (crane 693941 or more likely 693942 with lifters). I will do highway driving and towing (got to pull the boat) (and sometimes a (over)loaded trailer). Is there a better cam for what I am doing here, not going with radical pistons, want to run pump gas, will go with throttle body injection rather than the carb, already has MSD ignition that will interface with the computer for the fuel system (a GM adaption).

My advice here goes for a carb and I don't know if your injection system will allow for the cam so..... I would stay with a lift less than .480 but above .460, Advertised duration around 260-270 degrees, and duration @ .05 lift no more than 214 degrees. This will still give you a good sounding cam that will not kill off the lowend torque. I put a cam like this in my old 66 GMC and it actually increased the mileage by about 2 mpg.

Sounds cool man.

If ya wanna really wake her up, put a 2000 rpm stall converter in there.

It will really wake up any engine combo and will help on the towing.

Select whatever the "RV" cam is. Dont get radical or your fuel injection will be a pain.

Ken

Ron one more thing, if they run, start them up and run oil down the carb until they smoke really good and shut them off. It will help with waking them back up later,,,,,,,,,

oh the thing I dont like about the 694105 cam is the 4800 rpm valve float, my distributer doesn't make full advance curve until 6000 rpm

Surely not. Most of the time your advance will be all in by about 2300. I would check on that figure again.

It is a MSD with no vacume advance, I may go back to the stock part for the truck though!

Can I have the yeller pinto in the background? It would be awesome with a 347 stroker in it.

I'd say the change out the springs in the dist if it really is set at 6000. Being that high the spring cams would probably be off also. I've never heard of an advance curve waiting that long to come fully in.

The girl that own the there yeller pinto will not turn loose of it, she loves that thing. She has another just for parts! It is her daily driver, though it needs trany work now,,,,,,

I keep that distributer behind the seat! Only used it when I was running with Hemi's, when they run out of computer I'm just startin to wind up! I don't think that it will ever go back into the truck, and the Barracuda I want the vacuum advance on it. I think it pushes the engine to hard!
