PC gurus -net working ? ---- UPDATED

I have 2 pc's<br /> <br />1 old Gateway from 1999<br />Pentium 3 450mhz<br />320 RAM<br />running Windows 98 SE<br /><br />1 new Dell<br /><br />Project:<br />Install D-link DI-524 wireless router & dwl-g122 USB adapter (524 attached to Dell - 122 attached to Gateway.<br /><br />I've install all the hardware and the utility is showing 100% connectivity from the Gateway to the Router/Dell. However, when I try to connect to the internet through Explorer 6.0 on the Gateway, I get a MS error box - MIE has encountered a problem & needs to close. There's 2 buttons in the bottom right corner "Send Error Report" and "Don't Send".<br /><br />The usb adapter paperwork indicated it needs 500 mhz. Is the problem becuase I only have 450 mhz or is there something else I can do? Thanks.

That looks like a software error with IE and probably not related to any hardware changes. <br /><br />CPU clock speed does not matter, except everything runs a "little" slower.<br /><br />Did IE work with whatever Internet connection you had used before, if any?<br /><br />If so, You might try to re-install IE.

Open an MSDOS prompt and type: <br />cd \windows\system32<br />press enter key<br /> <br />then type:<br />ping 66.94.230.34<br />press enter key<br /><br />This will ping yahoo to see if you have internet connection. If you get replies, then your connection is working. If you get timeouts, then your connection is not working.<br /><br />It does sound like an IE software problem though.<br />CG

Marty - yes my gateway connected to the internet through an ethernet cable to my cable modem.<br /><br />Superglue - When I tried to ping 66.94.230.34 I got "Request timed out" 4 times and Packets sent = 4, received = 0.<br /><br />Guys, thanks for your help so far......<br /><br />As an update, I was able to connect to my wireless wire with an ethernet patch cable and after running a winsock patch can connect with the gateway hard wired to the router. But I still can't connect wirelessly. Any other ideas. The tech support at D-link said Windows 98 SE had wireless connection problems but wouldn't help. Thanks again.

Did you program the router and change the default SSID?? <br />Did you change the default router password?<br />Did you turn on encryption, either WEP or WPA?<br /><br />It's pretty easy to connect to your router via Cat5 cable, since Windows DHCP is enabled by default. <br /><br />When you're first getting the router setup, it best to NOT have encryption turned on. Later , when your're connected to the router wirelessly, you can turn on Encryption, but for now leave it off.<br /><br />Open your browser<br />On the address (URL) line,type in 192.168.0.1.This is the IP address for your router. Enter 'admin' for the user name,leave the password box empty. <br />Find the menu section to change the default SSID. The SSID is the name of your wireless router. Change the default name (default) to a unique name, TieOneOn, comes to mind. Click on the save tab. Change the wireless channel to either 1 or 11, hit save. Change the default router password, it's blank by default. Don't use a simple password here, add a few non dictionary characters mixed in, and use upper and lower case too. Example: tie$*thi$OnforKi#cks...you get the idea. Now write this password down,keep it safe. Do NOT click the option to hide the SSID. Save your settings.<br /><br />Run your Gateway machine. Unplug your Cat5 cable.Insert the USB NIC. Run the USB NIC client manager program. Do a scan for available networks. It should show "TieOneOn", that's your router. Click to connect. <br /><br />Confirm that you can surf the Web. If all goes well, you should be good to go. Lastly, go back into the router and turn on WEP or WPA. This keeps folks 'outta your router and freeloading on your dime. btw, use WPA if at all possible, WEP has been cracked. Don't rely on MAC address filtering or hiding your SSID to keep others out. I can find your MAC address and router SSID in 10 seconds. Turn on WPA-TKIP, and don't use any dictionary words...ever...mix up the code as mentioned before. <br /><br />There.....that should keep you busy for awhile...(grin)

As an after thought, if I upgrade my operating system on the Gateway to Windows XP, will this be any easier?

In the long run yes....Winxp and Win98 had issues in the file sharing dept. Nothing really too bad, but a few tweaks would have to be performed....

F I N A L L Y ---- got the wireless network going. Took a tech from Microsoft and a tech from D-Link over three hours of trouble shooting.<br />Thanks again to Marty, Superglue and Xcuseme.... you all gave me ideas to try and questions to ask the techs.<br />.......... now the upgrade from Windows 98 to XP<br />.... as an aside to show you how bad my luck has been.. I went to buy the upgrade<br />... was sold an edition that was for "PC's with Windows 95 or ealier. or pc's without windows" I asked the girl selling it to me if this was right because it didn't seem so to me she said " Oh yeah, your 98 is before 95"<br />...... well you guessed it, I have to drive over an hour each way to return it<br />.... I swear if it were raining soup.... I'd have a fork.
