Re: bottom paint

You can use automotive paint and spray it on if you like. This will give it a smooth shiney surface. Check out your local autobody paint people at a parts store. Tell them it is for fiberglass and paint away.

Bob

There is an old timer up here in Alaska that repairs/paints boats for a living, And he swears that for 30 years he has used rustoleum

Re: bottom paint

what i'm sayin' is ,,this is the place where you don't want to take short-cuts.. if your boats worth painting then it's worth to do it the best.. why fool around .plus if the deck/porch/whatever paint doesn't really work ... boy oh boy what a job/mess you'll have , in a major way..this is an area you don't want to expeiment with..also i agree that the " word " marine jacks up the price an maybe you can find it in a less costly venue.. but believe me it doesn't apply to paints.

Interlux is good stuff, I've had good luck with Pettit also. Expect to pay $60.00 to $80.00 per gallon. You won't need more than that. About 2 quarts if you spray it.

If it won't sit in the water for more than 48 hours at a time, you can use a "topside" paint. The topside paints will have better shine quality. I suggest the one part polyurethanes.

You shoud prep the area with 90-120 grit sandpaper and apply the appropriate primer for your desirted finish coat. If you have blisters, you'll have to treat them first.

Go to: www.pettitpaint.com There are lots of tips on that website and they will send you a complete painting guide. I have also found them helpful over the phone.

Good luck.

Re: bottom paint

Like Pursuit2150 suggests: Use bottom paint for bottom surface. Why not? You get lots of colors to choose from and, in the event of leaving the ship in the water for a couple of days, the antifouling.

Another issue, ofcourse, if you wanna paint above the waterline.. antifouling applied to the rest of the hull looks weird...
