I live on a tidal creek and was wondering about the tides and when was the best time to go out and come in in my jonboat.Say high tide is at 12 noon and we go out then. How much time do you figure we have before low tide to make it back to shore ? We could stay out till the next high tide but what if we want to go out only a few hours ?

Thanks

Re: Question about Tides/Tidal creek

I live nowhere near a tidal creek so this is all just WAGs. But, couldn't you get a tidal chart w/high & low tide times, watch the creek and see how much water is in it at different times based on the chart? Then you could use your observations and a tide chart to know when to leave and get back. Again, I've no experience in this, just running off at the mouth.

Thanks,
BL...

Re: Question about Tides/Tidal creek

I have been keeping track of the tides. Just thought there might be something I didnt know about tidal creeks. Wasn't sure if the tides were exactly the same as the ocean being as we are actually more inland. I can figure it out, just thought I'd double check with what I was doing.

Thanks

Re: Question about Tides/Tidal creek

Here on the Chesapeake, the wind has quite an effect on the tides in rivers (and creeks off rivers) -- suppose that is the case everywhere. In my case, a low tide with a northwest wind means I will have very little water.

grew up boating in Michigan, and I still don't have the hang of tides (or all the critters that live in salt water, for that matter).
