I read past posts, and they mention getting 'kiln dried' Doug Fir.

Does a person go to their local lumber yard or is this a special order?

Most of the stuff at my local yards are green.

H.

look around , yellow pages , call a lumber yard they mite know a referal.. i was needin' hondorus mahogany an was nowhere to be found ... snooped'round a little bit found many venues & many prices.. same thing with teak...doug fir is good wood, no doubt.. but it's always 3 or 4 on the best wood list for boat building..

So what would you consider to be the '#1 top choice' for wood in boat building?

Like past posts said, I'm for space-age materials whenever possible. If I'm going to be down to the strigers, I want to put something in there that can handle a Tsunami and come out wanting more! (LOL)

Thanks,

H.

Homerr,

You can also buy fiberglass stringers, you just cut them to shape like wood. Probably about the same price as the exotic woods. No rot there.

Try: www.westmarine.com

kiln dried fir should be an easy order from any decent lumber yard. Cost is only about 50% higher than green. Treat it with a couple of coats of water seal before you glass it in.

white oak than philip. mohogany then doug fir ... sometimes it's philip. mohogany first then white oak.. white oak is almost impossible to tell. an red oak rots like no other.. only an acid test of some kind can tell the diff. also white oak isn't user-friendly.. splits ,checks, cracks.. also some say it doesn't take glue/epoxy well..philip mohogany is very user-friendly an has great attrabutes...buy only the darkest red varity, only .. but what ever you decide ,,, give everything 2 coats of epoxy..

Thanks everyone...

I want to do the job right.
The stringers aren't in the best shape, so I might as well get them out and rebuild them.

Got the engine out, and the rusted out gas tank is next. Strippin' her down!

H.

Homerr,

If you want some of the specialty woods, you're going to have to go to some of the smaller yards that cater to woodworkers.

Going into Home Depot and asking for that is like going to McDonalds and asking for a bucket of drumsticks.
