Aren't these numbers traceable and identifiable? Seems like this is like some one trying to jimme a window in broad daylight.

You can trace a lot of them back to CHINA and other places were you got a snowballs chance in hell of getting anything done :)

And the cleaver ones lead to a dead end anyway :(

The real point is that if you have a GOOD hardware based firewall 99.99999 % of the bad guys are geting blocked

tommays

Use a "Reverse DNS" search. Google that there's lots of online aids.
99.9% of these so called "attacks" are automated attempts at known security holes. Don't get worked up about them, as long as you do your operating system updates they're rarely sucessful. And it's questionable how useful they'll be if they do find the hole. It's analogous to getting hit by a spitball.
And mostly the "attacks" come from computer zombies - some home system that picked up a peice of spyware that allows that computer to act as a mouthpeice for someone else. It's really the only way to sucessfully run a high bandwith, random attack like that.
Personally I don't bother with firewalls, anti-virus, etc. Now that I'm running linux 100% I don't bother with the occasional spyware check either. Every now and then it's fun to go through the logs and see who's been knocking, but you just can't sweat it.
Don't worry. There's more important things to think about. :)

No it is pretty secure from pc to machine.

HOWEVER - the key thing is to make SURE you are actually on the starbucks site or location site.

This is called pharming - where someone sets up a web connection NEXT to a starbucks that looks like the starbucks site - you connect and use the internet like usual - but that fake site is recording everything you do.

When you surf on these "open" networks I would not do any online banking etc.

Tomatolord

Ken, I'd be much more concerned about another patron at the public wifi hotspot sniffing your keystrokes.

Why sniff when you can watch it all on digital wi-fi video? No kidding, I’m much more concerned with someone watching over my shoulder than I am about wi-fi security. Video records keystrokes, window views, data, etc.

Well, you can think about sitting at a table with your back to a wall to help prevent cameras from watching your keyboard. Heck , you can be sitting in the parking lot and watch wifi signals 100's of feet away. If your signal is being transmitted (which it is), it can and will be seen by others. Encryption is about the only thing to be done to stop the snooping.

Tedder, according to that article it sounds like if the website is using SSL (using https), everything is OK.

Thanks for the info.

Ken
