I am looking to buy a gps unit for the car. One of the door to door units that tells you when to turn and all that good stuff. What brand would you recommend and why?

Thanks for the help.
Larry

Re: Auto GPS

Garmin. Several models.

Mine is a 276C which I chose because it is also a portable and a marine unit. For auto use only there are other models as good that don't cost nearly as much.

AVOID, at all costs, those RATZAKRATZA Chinese units that have the big screen and the spectacular specs for only about $700. Tried one. . .it croaked. They sent me another. . . which croaked, then another which didn't even work out of the box. They finally refunded my bux, which I spent on the Garmin which hasn't missed a nanosecond in two years.

Re: Auto GPS

Garmin makes gps software for a laptop. You plug the receiver unit into the USB, place the antenna, and the software runs on your big screen and talks through your speakers... and it's only $129 I think.

Re: Auto GPS

I have streets and trips with the GPS for my laptop as I travel quite a bit and I have to take my laptop with me anyway.

Only 130$ at best buy etc. However it is not as good as the full time systems. If I leave the route I have to hit a key to recalculate the new route (like if I get off on the wrong exit).

Still for $600 less it is a good deal.

I would get one of the garmin units - from what I read and have seen they are the top line units

The big issue is if you are going to rely on this unit then you need it to work ALL of the time not just most of the time. Or you will end up lost!

Tomatolord

Re: Auto GPS

I've got the Lowrance I-Way 500 in my personal van and it works very well. I had some initial difficulty getting used to how it wants to be given an address, but now it's a breeze. It's a portable 5" screen that cups to the windshield. I even programmed it for an address in TX, packed it in my suitcase and flew down. I put it in the rental car and it took me to my BIL's door.

In our Demo van we have the Eclipse AVN-7000. This is a permanent dash mount 7" AM/FM/CD/DVD/Nav unit that comes in Lexus vehicles. VERY user friendly, but pricey. We sell these to high end motorhome mfrs. These people travel around to new places more so than the average car.

Really, once you've been somewhere, you don't need the nav to get there again!
