Re: painting the prop

alot of alum props are powder coated...I don't know if the average guy can do that...most prop shops just paint them, but the only paint I've found to stick was Emron applied over Corlar epoxy primer, of which if you don't have some of this around, it'll cost more than a new prop for the paint.
If you carefully clean the prop with Muratic acid mixed with water-about 1 part acid to 7 parts water, do not get it on the inner hub, spray it on and let it set for 45 secs to a minute, then rinse well with clean water, air-dry and shoot with zinc chromate(sp?) dry and paint with whatever you want.

Re: painting the prop

My Merc service manual said that to restore the factory finish to lower units you needed the epoxy paint. Said rattle cans will wear off.

So, in my opinion, what's good for the lower unit must be good for the prop.

Remembering when I ran aluminum.....when raising kids and being broke all the time, a trip to the prop shop (to get the dings banged out) bought me a painted prop that lasted all of the first outing.

Mark

Re: painting the prop

I have an aluminum prop that I painted...somewhere. The paint has lasted for quite a while, of course it has never been on the boat since I took it off the day I purchased the boat. I keep it thinking I might use it as a spare. I had some Imron lemon yellow left from a project and shot it with that, it really looks cool. The thing to keep in mind after prep-work, is that paint needs to cure properly. It takes a good month for quality paint to reach its maximum strength. So if you paint a prop, I would use a different one for a few weeks, even then, I wouldn't expect it to last a very long time.

The factory powercoat lasts until the new prop is introduced to sand for the first time.

Rattle can paint lasts until you introduce it to water... First time you come out of the hole the high pressure just pulls the paint right off.

Wouldn't you have to remove the hub before powder coating? Or would it survive baking?
