Penn reel for cod fishing.

Hello.
I will be going out cod fishing in April and I started buying some gear. One of the things I have always really wanted is a good Penn reel. What reel can hold over six hundred feet of 50 pound mono test and is tough enough to winch these cod up from 200 feet? Or am I looking in the wrong direction? This is probably a once in a lifetime purchase. The reel is to be put on a 30 to 60 pound test 9 foot long ugly stick. Thanks for all advice.
Rolmops.

Rolmops!!!
Most of us around here for commercial fishing use a penn 113H-114 which is more then enough. They cost a little over $100bucks. Your best bet is to use one on the boat if you are going to use it once or twice. They use the 113
Plus the price of your trip includes the rod set up.
I may be a little slow in responding because I'm away this week
That one on e-bay sounds pretty good for the money.

Penn jigmaster/500 is a great reel that will last a lifetime without breaking the bank.. Plenty strong and cheap to keep.. :D

Few more bucks, get a 113 or 114, it'll last forever...

Either one, you can't go wrong.. I would buy new tho.. Older reels used bakelite(sp?) side plates that crack with age/use/abuse, at least thats my experience.. The new ones use plastic for the side plates that seems to hold up a little better..

Thank you all
Mellow Yellow, thank you, that reel is mine now! For that price I feel it is a steal. In fact I may very well splurge and buy a 113H on top of that.
Flyrod,You are probably right that I should just use a company rod and reel, but I plan to come back again and again.Besides, my brother in law and me bought a commercial stripers licence for this summer so we will be using those reels almost nonstop for two weeks in a row.

Re: Penn reel for cod fishing.

Rolmops
If you are going Rock Cod fishing then do not use mono line. Spectra lines so much better as small diameter and no strech. 200 to 400 feet down with mono you hardly even feel the fish, just notice the extra weight. 50lb spectra about the same diameter as 14 lb mono, this means can use smaller weights, feel the fish better and have more fun.

As far as reels go I have Penn 113h 4/0, Penn 330GTI, Penn 309, Penn 320 GT2 and by far my favorite is the Penn 320 Gt2 with spectra line from 30 to 65 lb test. If your fishing over 300 feet on a windy day you will need weight over one pound and Penn 330 Gti or a Penn 309 may be a better choice for the lower gear ratio to hall up the big wieghts.

Fishing 200 feet or more you will need weights from 8oz to 2 lbs. If your 9 foot ugly stick is the one I have seen then you will need something with less flex and shorter.

Been rock cod fishing since 1980 and it is my favorite type fishing. Fish on my own boat and ever year or two go on one of the party boats. If you are going for the first time and one time then I suggest you rent a pole for the $5 to $8. Twice I have been visiting with guys waiting to get on the boat that had bought big Penn reels an Penn pole and lots of gear and each of these guys never put a bait in the water. Both were so sick before we got to the fishing grounds that they just did not fish. My favorite pole is a Star rod 20 to 30 lb hand crafted convential 8 foot rod from Eangler.com.
Good Luck and enjoy.

Boatist:
Sounds good to me. People switching over to the lighter lines to spider wire & spectrum etc.
We have some heavy running tides depending on the moon and we will go to 24oz jigs at times
Allot of these head boats that take 30-40 people won't let you use them lines only mono easier to untangle. When using braided; spectrum or any other mordern day lines they will cut your line up first.

Thanks boatist.
I do intend to rent a rod as well.
As far as being seasick is concerned, well 8 years as a naval demolition expert put me on zodiacs in 7 foot waves,so that is not something I worry about. The braided line would be my favorite if there would not be another few people around me with their lines in the water.I want my line to react to current and such the same way theirs does.Mostly because braided line is very hard to untangle and the mates would cut it before they would cut company line.

Penn 10kg with 80lb spiderwire, or 50lb mono if on a charter boat.

The KG series are 2 speed which is nice when a good size cod is on the hook. It's a little more expensive than the above mensioned reels but once you use a 2 speed you woun't want to go back to a single speed.

After reading this entire thread once more,it occurs to me that I must have very serious cabin fever. In my case, talking about fishing and buying gear seems to be a therapy!

Re: Penn reel for cod fishing.

Fly Rod
I have 16 rods that I use Spectra line on and only one type line I took off and will never use again. That line is Spider line. The line comes unbraided, it comes untied, it breaks at way below it rating when you have a big fish on. In my opinion it is over priced junk. When black bass fishing guys useing it were glueing there knots to try and stop then from un tieing. I lost about a 35 pound Salmon I was fighting. The Salmon was out about 60 feet in open water and the line broke. I was useing 30 pound Spider line with a 20 leader useing a limber 9 foot 1 inch E glass rod rated at 15 to 30 pound. Drag set at 8 pounds with the rod bent same way I set all my Salmon rods. The line broke above the not and the line was less than 3 month old. Never had any other line mono or spectra brake in that condition. Bass fishing knots come untied even useing glue and their reccomended knot. My deep water 7 foot rods I put cortland spectron line on the first year that spectra line came out. That had been over ten years now and to this day have not broke a main line. Broke lots of leaders when hung up in the rocks. First year I put it on the difference in size weights I had to use and how you could feel the fish made a big difference. Only negative I have heard is fisherman useing graphite rod and use to setting hooks very hard have broke poles because the line does not streach.

You are right some party boat captains out here also did not like any kind of braded line when the spectra first came out. The old dacron lines used to be noted for floating up in deep water. Today out here most do not object at all. I tell you this, fishing along side a guy using 30 pound mono and I am useing 50 pound spectra both with the same size weight. As the boat drifts the mono line will fall behind while my line will lead the way giving me the first chance at the big Ling Cod.

Re: Penn reel for cod fishing.

Rolmops
Glad to here you have been out before. For me on a clear day with light seas and light wind there is no place I would rather be. We have been useing level wind reels except for my 2 113H reels that are on my heavy tuna rods. With the spectra line we are able to use the lighter 320 GT2 penn reels and have plenty of 50 pound line even out at 400 plus feet.

First year I was worried wife and kids would not be able to keep the line tight when catching Salmon. We have to use barbless hook in the ocean. In all these years we have lost very few and all in the first minute. After the first minute we have landed every fish even when we have doubles. Most of my ocean rods are E Glass. Star rod I mention in first post is E Glass over graphite and a great rod. My lighter Salmon rods ar all 9 foot and graphite.
Enjoy

Re: Penn reel for cod fishing.

I just might try that spectrum stuff.
Did try that spider wire but couldn't cast it. I use penn 850-950s exclusively.
And I do use 113h for deepsea fishing.
I'll stay away from that spider wire this time.
