1986 johson 175 wont go

i have a 1986 johnson 175hp outboard that will not go above 1200 rpms under load but after about 20 mins of this it will surge several times then take off like a scarred rabbit. if i raise the idle lever it will rev normally.

Check to be sure you have spark to all 6 cylinders. A spark-checker is helpful. Or, hook a timing light up to each plug wire and see if you get strong, constant flashes.

3 things. compression, proper spark, proper fuel mix. check compression on all cylinders, should be within 10% of each other, spark, covered above when it is acting bad. if you are good with these then it's a 99% fuel delivery.

I had about the same problem with my 1988 175HP Johnson. It turned out to be my starboard power pack/ CDI box. I guess it was going out. We put a new one in and no problems since. Before however she would take about 10 to 20 minutes before she would go (with brief points of kicking in here and there). However sometimes it was fine. Very wierd.
