1995 60 hp Bigfoot ignition problem

Last weekend the engine wouldn't start. Ran fine the last outing two weeks earlier. Mechanic pulled the boat and said the trigger is bad. I bought this boat/engine 5 years ago and had to have the stator, trigger and one plug coil changed the first season. Does this seem like normal wear and tear that the trigger would fail again after another 4 seasons, or is something else going on here causing the trigger to burn out? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Triggers seldom fail in this area, most likely a stator. Remove the black yellow wire from the switchbox first and ck for spark, if you still don't have spark and have a OHM or DVA meter we can talk you thru the tests for the components

Thanks. The mechanic told me that he checked the trigger with an ohm meter and that it was failed. So it's apparently not that common for this to happen then? I'm just wondering if something else is really the problem.

Test it don't through parts at it. If the mechanic will stand by the trigger being the trouble and don't want to keep changinng parts go with him as long as he understands that after the trigger you don't want to hear ahat some thing else failed and you need more parts any service place should be testing with a DVA so they are sure of the problem and can stand by their original diagnosis

Well, this guy said it definately was the trigger, but he needs to replace that to make sure that the CD module isn't also bad? Does that make sense or not?

Re: 1995 60 hp Bigfoot ignition problem

Sounds like a parts changer to me. A trigger is a plastic housing that hold 3 seperate windings at 120 degrees apart that simply moves back and forth to control timing, Each winding is independent of one another it is possable for one winding to go bad and on a 3 cyl engine like yours not send a signal to fire one cyl. but it is highly unlikely that 2 or more windings fail at once. So I am afraid you have a parts changer on your hands. There are many more of them out there than mechanics, general if the person you are talking to can not explain how each part of a engine works without a bunch of BS you are talking to a self proclaimed TECH. Beware of that bunch every day I hear horror stories from good people that are taken by these clowns. Sorry about this rant but I see so much of it every day and even on this forum it sickens me---Bob
