is nasty hot canal water going to overheat my outboard?

As I am driving through 90 degree canal water down here in SFL, I am wondering how hot the water can get before it no longer properly cools the outboard. Anyone had any issues with this?

Thanks,

where are you getting 90 degree water. i live i Fl and have never seen that. even the water from the power plants is not that hot. as long as you have a good thermostat and impeller your safe.

Hello TD,

On Sunday, coming down the Loxahatchee River from Jonathan Dickinson Park boat ramp towards the ICW, the Lox was 90. That didn't concern me so much because I wasn't in it too long. However, a few weeks back I was in this super narrow super shallow part of the Dania Cut-off canal (about a mile from where it connects to the South New River) heading towards the ICW. The trip is like an hour at idle speed and the water temperature was 91 degrees in many parts. You could feel the heat radiating off the stagnant, nasty water.

I was in a non power plant lake in N. Texas last week and the temp was 83 degrees (ambient air was running from high 70's to low 90's).....not that far from your 90 and by Aug this lake will probably be that hot. Max depth is 20' if that matters.

The pellet on my thermostat says (is stamped) it starts to open at 120F. Sounds like you're ok.

Several years ago the water in Barnegate Bay, New Jersey was 92 on the forth of July. The only overheat issue was with me, but a cold beer cured it!d:)

I was once in Lake Cumberland, KY in August. The air was 99, humidity 99% and the lake was 98. If you stay in the lake up to your neck in water and drink cold beer, you didn't sweat too much.:^

Water temperature down here in southern Louisiana is almost always in the low to mid 90s during the summer. Never had a problem in the 40+ years I have been boating.

Just make sure proper maintenance on your cooling system, i.e. water pump, thermostats, etc., is done regularly and you should not have any problems.

Well geez, I see that my 90 degree water is ice-cold compared to some areas, so I won't "sweat it"!
