Suzuki DT150S Troubles

I have an 04 Champion 193 with a 2002 Suzuki DT150 on the back. For the life of me, ever since buying this brand new, I cannot get the boat on plane at first. When you hit the throttle, the boat reaches approx 1500-2000 rpm's and starts to shudder and bog down. Most of the time, by taking it to neutral, hitting the foot throttle once or twice to clear it up, then engaging, it slowly begins to come on plane. I have had it to the dealer several times, and I hear anything from the boat is too heavy for the engine (which can't be) to the shaft (20") is too short, and the exhaust ports are under water when starting out.

We have changed plugs all the way from and NGK8, down to a 6, the dealer has changed thermostats, adjusted the TPS Sensor, and all this has managed to do is cut me back to 5000 rpms. To me, it also seems to use and awful lot of fuel.

It's sad to say, that Suzuki Marine has been little help to me on this matter.

Based on what I'm saying, is there anyone that may have any idea?

Re: Suzuki DT150S Troubles

It has a Suzuki "Thunder" 3 blade prop on it and I honestly don't know what pitch it is. But if it were the prop, why would it carry on like it was loading up? I'll definitely check the prop tonight and see if I can find out what the pitch is.

Thanks for the tip thus far!

... can you maybe post a pic of your engine on your boat ... just to give a better indication ...

OK, I apologize, it's a 4 blade Thunder with a 23 pitch on it. I took a picture of the engine this morning and will post it on here as soon as I figure out how.

Nope the pic doesn't work, you need to put in on a pic website and post the url eg. photobucket etc. , 23 pitch !!! damn that is a hell of alot for a 150hp, you will have little power on pull away but really good speed ... exactly what is happening in your case, get a 19 pitch propeller and go test it, you'll see the difference straight away .... and change your plugs back to NGK8 ....

Re: Suzuki DT150S Troubles

Ok, now I have some questions with respect to 3 blade vs. 4 blade prop. They say the 4 blade is for faster response out of the hole, but you will lose some top end. I've noticed at most of the Elite Series events, 99.9% of the pro's use a standard 3 blade stainless prop. Flipside, they all have 225's or larger. I guess if I'm going to reduce the pitch on the prop, should I consider going to a 3 blade?

And I'm trying this url thing

Yes, concider going to a 3 blade 19 pitch or even 17 pitch, but get a nice stainless steel speed prop ... I only race with ballistic high performance props, but the quicksilver lightspeed range is also nice .... my geuss would be that you want a better top end than pull away ? ...

Re: Suzuki DT150S Troubles

Well, I'm trying to get a little of both. Imean, right now, the hole shot is poor at best. When I launch in the morning, and hit the throttle first thing, forget it, the boat stands up, hits 2000 rpms and just dies. Once I get on plane, top speed is about 57. I'd like to get on plane quicker without losing anything on the top. It'd be nice to gain a little on the top if possible.

I noticed when I removed the prop, that the diameter is 13 3/4 x 23. When I change props, does the diameter stay the same? When I went to Suzuki's site, they showed nothing at 13 3/4, only 14 or above.

I really appreciate the help!

Re: Suzuki DT150S Troubles

Im almost certain from your info that it,s over-propped if you reduce the prop size you will be faster out of the hole
with regards top end you need to check your max revs when running the optimum will be when you get good pull out and top revs as close to manufacturers spec as poss as this will be where develop develope max HP see if you can borrow props from friends
best of luck
