High RPMs Low Speed

I'm' a newbie to powerboats. Just bought a new 2006 Bayliner 212 with a 43. Mercruser IO. I have been out 3 times with the boat. The past 2 times I have noticed that I have needed to keep the RPMs' at 4000 or so to get the boat to go at least 20 mph. If I pull back on the RPMs the boat does not want to move I have tried trimming the boat in and out ...no help. Boat is not overloaded. Seems like excessive RPMs. What could be causing the problem?

Thanks

You aren't trimming by using the trim gauge only as a reference are you? Put the drive ALL the way down (till it won't go down any further) and see what it does.

Don,

Last time out I had the drive all the way down (I ignored the gauge). I got the boat on plane (4,000 or greater RPMs) and then tried to trim the boat out with a slight adjustment on the trim. With that the boat immediately lost speed and the RPMs went higher.

Something ain't right. Sounds like time to take it in for some warrenty repairs.

A spun prop or coupler would get worse and you would get rpm and NO speed, no way would you be able to get to 20mph and stay there if either were spun.

You might be over trimming and not realizing it. Start with the drive all the way down. Advance the throttle to near wide open throttle, as the boat starts to plane, slowly raise the drive. Too much trim and you will hear the rpm's increase, lower the drive just a little. Maybe the dealership propped the boat wrong also. Post what prop is installed.
