Hi All
I have a 1970 or 71 johnson 60 hp hydro electric engine hasnt run right since i got it . problem is it starts on a dime and runs ok in driveway but on water as i advance throttle there is no power.and it barely moves push throttle all the way foward and just dies. Checked compression on all 3 140 psi. new plugs ,checked spark with spark checker all 3 good. it had very old gas in it 4 seasons at least got old tank out put fresh gas /oil mix 50:1 and cleand fuel pump screen. Could it be carb need thorugh tear down or timing? also I have manual.
Thanks All

Re: no power

Old gas=rebuild carbs.

Make absolutely certain that battery is good and connections are clean and very tight. Grab a pliers for those wingnuts!

It's doing the same thing as one I'm working on and symptoms are similar. He replaced the battery and barely got the connections finger-tight. His new style pulse pack is probably bad. But before I pronounce it Dead I'm pulling the flywheel to check the points. They should be cleaned-up and gapped to .010". Cranks like to rust and it wears down the points rubbing surface and the points don't open before long. Check that for sure! Be VERY careful of the distributor cap. They fracture exTREEMly easily.

Hi All Thanks for reply Willy.
So you think pull and rebuild all 3 carbs and pull flywheel and clean and gap points?

Re: no power

you will need a harmonic balancer puller, and use 1/4 X 20 #8 hardened bolts or they will pull out of the flywheel. the replacment torque should be 100-105 ftlbs. and use a new woodruff key.

Re: no power

Most times the points will be fine after a little clean-up. Check them out first before you order any..Hard to find...
