Free boat

I recently acquired a 1988 four winns in exchange for some motor work I did on a car. The boat had been put into storage with the plug still in place. The previous owner returned to find that their boat had turned into a 17' bathtub! The boat was filled with water up to the exhaust manifold. Being a total newbie in the boat world, I figured rebuild the motor, replace the starter, alternator, coil and distributor and I would be good to go. (Don't everyone laugh at once)

After reading some threads on this forum I realized that I needed to check out the structure of the boat. As most of you have already guessed, the deck was rotted, the stringers water logged and the foam saturated.

Undaunted, I have decided to continue with the project. Wish me luck!!!

Here is a link to some photos I have taken of the progress.

Don't be afraid to tear things apart to fix it. Remember,,, if you can't fix it,,,,, theres always someone out there who can.

wow $500 would solve all my problems, but living in the midwest it would cost twice that to get it here.. :/

If you get tired of being covered in fiberglass, switch to something else for a while. Small stuff like painting windsheild frames or trim pieces will help keep you motivated.

epresutti, I actually found your page the other day and saved it. That is one amazing restoration!

We got the rest of the foam out this weekend. The stringers were not as bad as I had feared, although I will have to replace some of them, and replace some fiberglass that I took out to check them.

Im going to try to get the motor pulled this week. I think it is going to take a complex system of levers and pulleys.

If your going to replace some of them. Why not replace them all? It can't be that much more time to know its right and safe for yourself and family.

Hey, if you're lucky, it is probably only as bad as it looks! 20 or 30 over on the center two cylinders and she's good to go.

But I bet when you tear it down, there is a lot more rust damage to bearing surfaces, crank, cam, etc, etc, etc...

I just finished working on darn near the same boat! Mine is an 1986 Horizon 190 with a Yammy 150 outboard. I ended up replacing the two center stringers and most of the floor, as well as rebuilding the gas tank compartment/opening. I have lots of pictures, but I have not had the time to get them posted. Make sure to get that carpet out from underneath the front open bow section where it is sandwiched between the floor and the fiberglass. Mine was soaked!
